General Discussion Instructions
Your total response should be at least 250 words. Your explanations should be complete, clear, concise and thorough, and supported by cited information from a class learning resource, and follow APA style with your in-text citation and reference.
Show evidence of thoroughly reading and listening to the course resources. This is preferable to outside research. But if you provide additional resources, they will be graded on their scholarly credibility; that means sources of questionable truth may result in a lower grade on the post and sources of good credibility may result in a higher grade.
ANSWER
Human Development M3.1
The sense of self starts to develop from 9 to 24 months. A parent can tell whether the child has started developing a sense of self by putting them in front of a mirror. If they show signs of recognizing that the image in the mirror is them, they have developed a sense of self, and they are on their way to developing feelings such as shame, empathy, and sympathy (Lally &Valentine-French, 2019). By the time a child is three years old, a parent might notice that a child tries to make right their wrongdoings by saying sorry or trying to do any other thing they believe will make up for their mistake. The sense of self changes from toddlerhood to early childhood as the child continues to be aware of themselves. By the time they are seven years old, they are more aware of themselves, and they also stop being focused on themselves so much and start noticing the outside environment.
Parents can help their children develop a sense of self by letting them discover themselves on their own. This means parents should not be overly involved with their children’s lives. They should let them play outside with the other children as they start to discover themselves and also start discovering things such as sharing with others, handling conflict, and being independent. Parents can also help the child have positive self-esteem by reacting to their achievements (Slentz & Krogh, 2017). For example, if a child discovers something new, clapping for them encourages them. It is also important to be there to help them overcome negative events. For example, a 3-year-old is in the process of discovering a sense of self. When they fall on the playground and are crying, they expect their caregiver to help them through this event. The parent can help them by telling them that they are going to be okay and encouraging them to get back on the playground to play with others.
