Religions and Happiness

Happiness is a goal that many human beings desire. Happiness can be defined as a state of well-being or state of mind. Ideally, happiness as a state of mind means how one is satisfied with their life linked to the experiences that make an individual happy. Studies have indicated that religion plays a significant role in making people happy and more engaged in their communities (Frey, 2018). Religious individuals have a better perception of their quality of life, reflected in their psychological health domain. Therefore, religion favors the development of positive feelings and thoughts, which improves well-being and happiness.

Actively religious individuals are more likely to be happy compared to their non-religious peers. Ideally, religion means being part of the social network, such as attending religious services which bring happiness and a sense of well-being. Social network leads to close connection with earthly neighbors, which brings life satisfaction. Considerably, religious teachings make their beliefs more satisfied and tend to be less anxious or depressed. For instance, Christians believe that happiness is a gift from God, but it depends on proper conduct and an optimistic view of life which results in happiness. Active participation of Christians in congregations and social networking with others leads to their happiness.

Although religion is linked to happiness, it’s not necessary for happiness. When people have a clear sense of purpose about what makes life meaningful, they are more likely to be satisfied and happy. Considerably, happiness is a psychological concept that has to do with positively charged emotional states and a general sense of satisfaction with an individual’s life. Happiness is rooted in activities and experiences that make an individual happy. According to Aristotle’s Philosophy, the ultimate happiness is linked to the idea of living a good life which is achieved through a combination of wisdom and virtue (Elliott, 2017). Living a life guided by virtue and wisdom is a road to happiness.
