In postoperative patients, how does aromatherapy compare to antiemetic Medication for postoperative
Introduction
Hospitalization tends to be a stressful occurrence that impacts the psychological and physical well-being of the patient, which can influence their medical compliance and physical recovery. Studies have reported that postoperative symptomology and lack of preparation after surgery have led to negative beliefs and thoughts linked to psychiatric comorbidity. The postoperative period begins after surgery and after the patient is discharged. Postoperative patients require postoperative care after the surgical procedure. Postoperative Nausea and vomiting have been the leading complications among patients after surgery. Nausea and vomiting are distressing and common symptoms of surgery, leading to complications such as increased pain, electrolyte, aspiration, and dehydration (Brown, Danda, and Fahey, 2018). Postoperative management includes aromatherapy and antiemetic treatment, which can facilitate postoperative complications. This paper will compare aromatherapy and antiemetic therapy for postoperative patients that have experienced Nausea and vomiting. Comparing the two treatment options is essential in identifying the most effective and improving the quality of care after surgery.
Summary of Topic
Over the years, technology and science research has focused on new approaches to surgical issues, such as improved anesthetic pathways and laparoscopic surgeries, which have increased the success and rate of ambulatory day surgeries. Nevertheless, postoperative Nausea and vomiting (PONV) have increasingly challenged discharge. Postoperative vomiting and Nausea have severe side effects that can influence the patient’s recovery process.
Nausea and vomiting have impacted the automatic nervous system, which has led to excessive swallowing and salivation, which may be triggered by distention and irritation of the gastrointestinal tract (Asay, Olson, Donnelly, and Perlman, 2019). Postoperative vomiting and nausea impact the individual patient and healthcare organization where the surgery occurred. Patients tend to experience minor and severe complications, including dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and the incapacity to consume liquids and food after surgery. These complications have led to increased length of stay in hospitals and high health care costs due to additional time required to care for the patient.
Regarding the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, vomiting and Nausea that occur during the first 24 hours are considered PONV (Abril, Diaz, Yasui, Collins and Elsabrout, 2019). Traditionally, the care providers relied on antiemetic Medication to treat PONV. Over the years, aromatherapy has been considered as an alternative solution for antiemetic Medication. The PICOT question that guided the research was: In postoperative patients, how does aromatherapy compare to antiemetics for postoperative. The evidence-based study aimed to compare antiemetic treatment and aromatic therapy as interventions for PONV.
Assessing the effectiveness of healthcare interventions is critical in informing future decisions. Health care providers compare the observed outcomes to be realistic with the effectiveness of the current health interventions. This allows the choice of the most effective intervention to improve the quality of care. Therefore, for this case, antiemetic Medication and aromatherapy will be compared to examine the most effective intervention in postoperative treatment and enhance the quality of care and health outcomes after surgery.
Relevance to Practice
Management of postoperative vomiting and Nausea is essential in promoting the patient’s health after surgery and reducing healthcare costs. Ideally, when a patient experiences postoperative care, they are likely to be readmitted or increase their length of stay in the hospital, leading to increased workload for the healthcare providers and high healthcare costs. Comparing the effectiveness of antiemetic Medication and aromatherapy is essential in determining the most effective intervention to reduce the scope of side effects and discomfort after surgery. Nurses will be aware of the most appropriate intervention, thus implementing a standard practice for quality care and treatment of PONV.
Identifying the most appropriate intervention will decrease patient vomiting and Nausea after surgery and prevent discharge delays. PONV can lead to prolonged recovery and discharge, which affects the family due to psychological stress and significant financial impacts on families. Effective treatment of these complications can reduce the healthcare costs and length of stay in hospitals, thus eliminating psychological and financial stress for the family. Nurses would rely on the intervention since it is the highest most in enabling the patients to regain their strength as well as come back to their regular life.
Search Method
The research relied on previous evidence-based researches in EBP articles. Articles were selected through inclusion and exclusion criteria, where abstracts were compared, and studies appraised through critical appraisal tools. The PICOT question drives a sensibly created search proof. The PICOT question was utilized to formulate an exploration for evidence comprising of major databases. Search restrictions were developed, containing results from articles within the last ten years. The highly considered research designs included systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials.
Summary and Synthesis of Findings
Brown, Danda, and Fahey (2018) carried out a project that examined the effectiveness of aromatherapy in lowering PONV. The project relied on a quasi-experimental plan with patients who received aromatherapy to treat PONV. The project’s outcome indicated that utilization of blended aromatherapy leads to reduced patients’ reports on vomiting and nausea vomiting after surgery. The findings indicated that aromatherapy effectively eliminates patient vomiting and Nausea and reduces discharge delays.
Asay, Olson, Donnelly, and Perlman (2019) conducted a systematic review that focused on the use of aromatherapy in PONV treatment. This involved searching on major databases such as PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane, which yielded five randomized controlled trials. The overall synthesis indicated a positive effect on aromatherapy as a complementary therapy to antiemetic medications. Precisely, aromatherapy with ginger oils, peppermint, and spearmint oils positively impact PONV as an adjunct to antiemetic Medication.
Abril, Diaz, Yasui, Collins, and Elsabrout (2019) stated that giving patients a choice to rely on aromatherapy in place of traditional medications assists in expanding direct patient care. Abril, Diaz, Yasui, Collins, and Elsabrout (2019) conducted a study on the traditional pharmacologic treatments, which illustrated a clear link between aromatherapy in the reduction of vomiting and Nausea. The study found that aromatherapy was an effective treatment for post-discharge vomiting and Nausea thus would complement the traditional pharmacologic treatment such as antiemetic Medication.
Implications for Practice
Reducing the incidence of Postoperative vomiting and Nausea benefits the patient, healthcare providers, and families. The use of aromatherapy in place of antiemetic Medication would reduce Nausea and vomiting after surgery as well as eliminate discharge delay. Aromatherapy will help in expanding direct patient care and quality improvement after surgery. Psychological and physiological effects have adverse effects on patient treatment and recovery. Aromatherapy will increase patient comfort and eliminate postoperative complications in patients. This will also eliminate families’ financial and psychological stress due to readmission, delayed discharge, and high healthcare costs.
Conclusion
The new approaches in managing patients’ recovery after surgery have focused on improved recovery time, quick discharge, reduced healthcare costs, reduced postoperative complications, reduced readmission, and psychological benefits. The administration of aromatherapy has been more effective than traditional antiemetic Medication due to quality improvement, reduced length of stay, and decreased postoperative medications. Evidence shows that aromatherapy can low PONV more effectively and act as an adjunct to antiemetic Medication.
