International Trade and Governmental Influence
Paul Bova’s Response
Governments have three was through which they influence international trade; quota systems, subsidies and tariffs. Political relations and conflicts of governments influence global trade. I agree with Paul that the government influences international trade with an illustration of America and Cuba. Cuba and United States had strained relationship since Fidel Castro overthrew United States backed government. In 2014, Raul Castro and President Obama announced restoration of full diplomatic relations that would ease bilateral tension and loosening the restrictions on travel, remittance, financial services, telecommunications and trade. However, after Trump was elected into office, there were issues that arose leading to banned commerce with businesses operating on behalf of Cuban intelligence agencies. The white house influenced international trade through imposing economic sanctions and curbing remittances. Joe Biden has announced the relaxation of certain Cuban sanctions and regulatory changes to renormalize U.S-Cuba relations (U.S. Department of State, 2021.
Mathew’s Response
I agree with Mathew that Russia has impacted global trade. The current Ukraine and Russia war on global trade and investment indicates that the world trade is likely to drop, lowering the global GDP. The Russian Federation renewed Ukraine Invasion and increased global sanctions that have led to global implications in the U.S and global economy developments (Kammer et al., 2021). The war which has already resulted to security, economy and humanitarian crisis has had a spillover effect which has hampered the national economic recoveries from the global pandemic. Rather than Gold, Russia is the primary exporter for refined petroleum, crude petroleum, and coal and petroleum gas. They are one of the largest exporters of energy products after United State and China thus affecting the global trade. Russia has leveraged their trade of energy to neighboring countries in exchange for indirect and direct support for their military goals (Yacoubian, 2021). Russia has relied on the sale of energy as an influence of trade which is their primary goal. It’s impossible for a country that does not produce energy to put sanction on a country that supplies energy.
