Assume you have a job interview next Tuesday. You have been informed that the interview process will take almost all day. You realize that you will not be able to make it to your work next Tuesday at your current job. How do you proceed with your current employer?
1. Should you tell the truth? If so, would your current job be in jeopardy? Would your employer think you are disloyal and, as a result, not consider you in the future for a raise or promotion?
2. Should you lie? For example, you could tell your current employer that you need the day off because you have to go to the doctor.
3. Should you just wait until Tuesday morning and “call in sick”? Which of these alternatives are legal? Which are ethical? Are you influenced most by the formalist approach (basically mandates that a person should act in a manner that he or she believes that everyone should act) or consequentialist approach (focuses on the consequences of the action rather than the action itself) to ethical decision-making?
Be sure to draft your answers in paragraph form, discussing each question thoroughly. You will also need to reply substantively to a classmates’ posting. Remember that the questions may be asking you for your opinion, and not necessarily a specific answer from the text. Use your new knowledge to work it out!
ANSWER
Job Interview VS Current Job
In my current job, it would not be a good idea to tell my current employer that I will be out the whole day interviewing for another position. The only time I could tell the employer of my plan is if I am ready to lose the job or am sure that I will automatically get the position I am applying for. Telling my employer about the other job would be considered disloyal, and it would destroy my chances of a future in the company. The incident will probably be used against me in the future.
I would probably tell the employer that I have a personal issue I need to attend to on that day. I would not necessarily specify what I am going to do. Being vague will make it easier for me. Going for a job interview in another company is technically attending to a personal issue, and therefore I will not be lying about needing the day off to take care of something personal. I could also take the Tuesday and use it and then ask the company to deduct one day out of my leave days. This makes what I am about to do ethical without lying to my employer.
I believe the second approach is better compared to the third. I am also a consequentialist. My actions, in this case, will not have any effect on me and my current company (Chapter 2). The actions will also give me a chance to get a better job without jeopardizing my chances in the current company, and therefore, I believe that people should way the consequences of their actions. Lying that one is unwell on the morning of the interview could lead to follow-ups, leading to one being caught in a lie. Asking for the Tuesday off to take care of personal issues is technically not a lie, and thus, one cannot be caught.
