Alberto Ginastera

Alberto Ginastera is one of the most widely acknowledged Argentine singer of classical music. Ginastera is among the leading Latin American classical musician. Ginastera is known for his national and local music idioms and compositions. He was musically talented since childhood, where he took private music lessons that helped him to grow his music composition, thus began his composition in his early youth. Ginastera evolved contrapuntal and harmonic setting congenial with native patterns. He was born in 1916 and studied in Buenos Aires at the conservatorio Williams and the National conservatory. He was awarded the Guggenheim award. He later became a professor at the University of La Plata and Argentine Catholic University. Ginastera was also the founder of the league composer after he returned to his hometown. Ginastera died in 1983 at the age of 67 years.

Ginastera music composition techniques were eclectic and unique. He also made the use of microtones, aleatory, serial procedures such as a selected series of rhythms and pitches. The music composition of Ginastera can be categorized into three periods, which include subjective nationalism, objective nationalism, and neo-expressionism. His composition styles relied on the flexible application of serial principles. Ginastera also utilized the Argentina folk themes in a subtle and straight forward way. Later, he also integrated the European Avant gadre style that paid more emphasis on abstracted forms. The music was also influenced by Gauchesco tradition, which was a symbol of him being an Argentine.

One of Ginastera’s classical composition was his first opera, Don Rodrigo. The opera relied on classical instrument forms such as suite, canonic progressions, rondo, and scherzo. The opera was a perfect representation of classical instruments such as bass, bell, alto, and sop that were used to offer a wonderful performance. Ginastera’s work has been a profound influence in the classical compositions since most of his compositions have still been recorded and played frequently.
