Overview

In Module 7, you will write a cause and effect Toulmin argument essay from the Cause and Effect Toulmin Argument Thesis/Outline Assignment that you submitted in Module 6.  In this final essay in the course, you will synthesize the skills you have learned to form a strong argument and incorporate them into the Toulmin model cause and effect essay.  This assignment will allow you to demonstrate how you have developed in your documentation style usage and critical thinking skills.  You will also use the research strategies that you have learned throughout the term to locate your own outside source material to develop your cause and effect Toulmin argument in your essay. This final essay assignment in the course can be an indicator of what you have learned and areas in which you may still need to grow as you work to complete your academic requirements and reach your professional goals.

Instructions

Review chapter 15 in the textbook for the sample cause and effect Toulmin argument essay written in the documentation style for your major course of study. Using the sample and your outline from Module 6, write an ethical essay using the Toulmin model of argument in which you address the question in the prompt. The research sources for this essay have not been provided for you. All sources that you use must be credible academic sources. You may include biblical support, but your biblical support does not count in the required citations.

• Prompt: (Choose 1) What is the impact of technology in the American workplace? or What is the impact of Covid-19 on the American economy?

• Write a 1,200–1,500-word proposal essay using the Rogerian Model of argument in which you address the question in the prompt. (Title page, citations, and reference section should not be included in word count.)
• Document your sources correctly according to your documentation style (Current APA, MLA, or Turabian).
• Integrate at least 4 quotations, 1 summary, and 1 paraphrase (6 total) into your essay from at least 3 credible sources to support your thesis statement and provide opposing arguments.

Impact of technology in workplaces

In the world today, technology has developed and is developing at a very fast rate. Technology is been employed in different sectors. The use of technology in workplaces has also increased at a very calling rate. This has happened due to the faster growth of the digital world. Digital information has caused technology to develop so much. The use of technology in American workplaces has raised great concern about its impacts on these workplaces. One of the great impacts of the use of technology on American workplaces is that it has made people in these workplaces do their activities faster with accuracy. It has also reduced distractions in the workplaces and increased the general productivity in all the businesses in America. I strongly agree with this statement that technology has increased speed, accuracy, and productivity in American workplaces. Many people have argued that technology has positive impacts in American workplaces while others have argued that it has negative impacts. This paper will discuss the impact of technology in American workplaces.

One of the pieces of evidence that have shown that technology has increased speed, accuracy, and productivity in American workplaces is the use of wearable technology in workplaces (Jacobs et.al 2019). A survey that was done among the American companies showed that many workers in these companies use wearable technologies. Wearable technologies are digital electronic devices that can be worn on the body (Jacobs et.al 2019). These devices can then be used for the sharing of information and dissemination of information. These wearable technologies include devices like headphones, digital watches, and virtual reality (Jacobs et.al 2019).

These wearable technologies can be used to monitor productivity (Jacobs et.al 2019). Virtual reality for an instant can be used to monitor what is happening in a business. One can observe what all the other workers in the business are doing while the observer is still sited in the same position. It is even possible that the monitor may be in another palace that is far away from the business geographical position (Jacobs et.al 2019). The use of virtual reality has mostly been adopted by managers and foremen to observe what their colleagues in business are doing (Jacobs et.al 2019). This reduced the tiresome work that these managers and foremen had in the past when technology had not yet developed to this level. The use of virtual reality has therefore made the work of productivity monitoring to be easy and enjoyable (Jacobs et.al 2019). Managers can now monitor many activities while seated and can also accomplish their tasks while they are away from the workplace. As a result, the use of wearable technologies has helped in monitoring productivity in the workplace (Jacobs et.al 2019).

The use of wearable technologies has also been applied to provide instructions and improve tasks management (Jacobs et.al 2019). This has been accomplished especially by the use of headphones that have mouthpieces and earpieces. These headphones can be used by instructors in workplaces (Jacobs et.al 2019). They can be used to give instructions to the workers in the low rank. Every worker is given headphones that they can wear to make sure that they hear what their boss tells them. This is a simpler way of giving instructions instead of the instructor going around to look for all the workers to tell them what they are expected to do (Jacobs et.al 2019). Providing instructions by the use of headphones is also employed in the airplanes where each pilot has their headphones. Pilots use these headphones to give any instructions to the works in the plane or the passengers traveling in the plane (Jacobs et.al 2019). The use of headphones as wearable technology has therefore improved the process of task management. This has greatly reduced the tiresome work that instructors had of calling meetings now and then so that they can ensure that instructions are followed to the letter (Jacobs et.al 2019). This has led to an increase in productivity in businesses and workplaces.

The use of technology has also increased speed, accuracy, and productivity in American workplaces by improving cooperation and coordination in these workplaces. It has never been easier to coordinate a team in a workplace, an organization, or a company. Technology allows people in these workplaces to work more intimately and closely in some aspects, even when the workers are far away from each other. People in these workplaces need to thank the online communication tools. Collaboration is also made easier to achieve even when different types of workers are not physically present. With cloud-based file-sharing solutions like the Google cloud and Google drive workers in different geographical positions may access files from their defined storage regardless of time or weather. Teams may also hold meetings remotely using video conferencing technology and work on the same shared documents at the same time. This has greatly increased speed, accuracy, and productivity in American workplaces.

The application of technology in American workplaces has improved working conditions. However, some people still claim that technology has caused laziness and unemployment in American workplaces. The reason behind this argument is that many workers do not report to these workplaces even the managers and other top-rank workers in businesses. The workers prefer to work from home.

Technology also causes distractions in workplaces (Mark et.al 2018). Those workers who use computers in the workplaces have frequent messages and emails running into their desktops. These notifications distract them from what they are working on and concentrate on the new messages (Mark et.al 2018). This lowers the productivity of a business because the workers have divided attention and do not concentrate on serious matters in a business (Mark et.al 2018). Social media also causes distractions in workplaces. Some of the social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram are very addictive and many workers are always logged in to their accounts in the computers used in the workplaces (Mark et.al 2018). These social media platforms cause a very great distraction because many workers are always scrolling in these platforms to see what is new and what is trending. These social media platforms may also cause distraction in workplaces when some emergency information is posted (Mark et.al 2018). The workers in these workplaces will stop their works and start discussing emergency issues. These technologies, therefore, harm American workplaces (Mark et.al 2018).

The use of technology in American workplaces has caused replacement and a lack of jobs for many workers (McClure 2018). This has been caused by the application of artificial intelligence to manufacturing machines that can imitate human beings and can even perform tasks more task accurately and perfectly than the human beings themselves (McClure 2018). Since the industrial revolution, machines like the robots replacing humans in the workplace have been a constant source of fear, and with the advent of automation in recent decades, it has become much more fearful (McClure 2018). In the first, these machines were being developed to perform hazardous tasks that human beings cannot perform but now they are doing almost every activity in the workplace (McClure 2018).

The application of artificial intelligence in manufacturing these machines has caused the machines to mimic human beings in all activities (McClure 2018). This has caused many businesses and organizations to employ these machines in most of their business activities. In different sections of the country and among different groups, industries are adopting robots to varying degrees, and the results vary; especially the automobile and automotive industry has used robots more than other industries in the world (McClure 2018). This has greatly affected lower and middle-income people making them end up conducting manual labor that can be found in these automotive industries. This work is tiresome and these workers only work for a short period and later quit because they are always overworked (McClure 2018). The workers who were previously working in these businesses are also replaced by machines (McClure 2018). This has greatly caused a lack of jobs for the people who have the potential to work. Technology, therefore, causes unemployment and laziness in American workplaces (McClure 2018).

In conclusion, the use of technology in American workplaces has negative impacts as well as positive impacts. The technology can improve general productivity in workplaces if used in the right way and can also cause a decline in productivity if not used in the right way. Many companies and organizations have adopted the use of machines that use high technology. The machines have either helped or affected these companies negatively.
