Continuous Quality Improvement
Continuous quality improvement is defined and deliberate process focused on activities that are responsive to the needs of the community and improving the health of a population. The key to any continuous quality improvement initiative is utilizing structured planning approach to examine the current practices and improve processes and systems to achieve the desired outcome of the future state. Medical errors have been among the leading causes of death in the United States. Since errors result from system or process failures, its essential to adopt process improvement techniques to identify ineffective care, inadequacies and preventable medical errors influences changes linked with the system. Healthcare organizations can rely on the point of care quality improvement or the plan to do study act initiative to reduce medical errors.
The Point of Care Quality Improvement (POCQI) model is intended for quality improvement in healthcare organizations. POCQI model can help in eliminating medical errors through training of workers. The POCQI model focuses on offering a newer paradigm with an assumption that lack of knowledge is the main causes of medical errors thus inadequate quality of care (Chawla, 2020). Medical errors are encountered by healthcare providers due to poor communication between healthcare providers, diagnostics errors, absence of safety nets and medical mistakes.
Plan Do Study Act is an initiative for testing change by planning, observing, trying and acting on what is learned. The plan to do study act initiative is a four stage problem solving model that can be used in eliminating medical errors and carrying out change (Hughes, 2008). The cycle of plan do study act is a trial and learning method that allows test changes quickly and see what works. The quality improvement approach based on plan to do act cycle can contribute to reduction of medical errors in healthcare. Quality improvement efforts are effective in achieve the goals of reducing medical errors and maintain the quality of care.
