I agree with the post on the inclusion of patient preferences in the treatment plan. One thing that stood out in the post is the importance of patient preferences in informing clinical decisions. It is up to the care provider to treat the patients holistically and to place the treatment plan with the choices of the patient. I concur with the post that with the patient preferences in mind, the care providers can tailor treatment strategies that will match the demand or decisions of the patient. For the scenario provided in the post, the women in labor indeed tend to offer their birth plans that should be honored to provide care with the desires of the patient.

I also agree on the point of decision making between the provider and the patient through three essential elements: deliberation, information exchange, and decision on treatment. The post has also shared some ideas on patient decision aid, which is considered important in making explicit decisions by providing information about alternatives and their outcomes. The decision aids are effective in evaluating the most appropriate plan for the patient’s care (Hoffmann, Montori, and Del Mar 2014).  The patient aid can be an essential tool in enabling the patients to agree on the treatment plan with their loved ones.

Increased patient involvement in treatment planning has been linked to improved health outcomes (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2018). It is important to involve patients in the decisions since recognizing patients as experts with unique knowledge impacts the health outcomes. Patient preferences contribute to patient-centered care tailoring the care strategies to being more capable and effective, thus resulting in greater patient satisfaction (Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, 2016). Patients are more satisfied when the healthcare services are delivered to meet their choices on a treatment plan. Patient preferences have also offered direction in the selection of treatment options since they inform the clinical decisions and share decision making in the treatment plan.
