Statement of the problem

Since the wake of Covid-19, contractors in Australia have had numerous challenges in acquiring and transporting construction material. Before the outbreak of covid 19, contractors had an easier time acquiring construction material. The prices of material were relatively low and the transportation was faster. Australia imports most of the construction material from China (Warren et al.,, 2020). When the Australian government banned travel across borders, it became difficult for Australian contractors to obtain construction material.  Contractors and subcontractors in Australia, just like the rest of the world, currently experience difficulty in accessing construction material. In some cases it’s difficult to obtain the material in good time because of the restrictions of movement imposed by the government to contain the pandemic.

The pandemic has hampered the construction process forcing some of construction projects stopped or delayed. The prices of material have shot up thanks to the heavy taxes imposed on them. 2020 has been the year that Australia has had the lowest number of constructed buildings for the whole decade. Besides, the cost of construction rose by about 70% from 2019 to 2020 (Baily et al.,2020). Previous researchers have delved into addressing the impact of covid-19 to the people working in construction sites and the challenges of keeping social distance at their places of work. They have highlighted the risk that the workers are exposed to as they handle and share construction tools. The researchers have failed to analyze the pertinent issue of acquisition of construction material during this pandemic.

The purpose of this research is to determine how covid-19 has caused shortage of construction material and come up with strategic measures that can be implemented to counter this problem. This research is founded on the common knowledge that the pandemic has affected various sectors of the world economy and the building and construction sector is not exceptional.
