Healthcare Management

How the management of health care-related projects differs from non-health care-related project

The management of healthcare-related projects is different from non-healthcare projects because these projects mainly seek to evaluate, distribute and promote quality health or disease prevention. They differ because the health-related project management is patient-centered and finds ways to provide care to the patients (Casola et al., 2016). Non-health care-related projects have different aims and objectives. These may include projects on the various ways they can reduce costs, promote their products or introduce new developments in the market. In simpler terms, these projects are often business-oriented. This makes them differ from health-care-related projects because it sets everything aside and purely focuses on the well-being of the patients and the care given.

Challenges faced during project management in health care

In health care, project management is an essential aspect because it has various roles to play. For instance, it helps in risk management, improving project outcomes, and controlling an organization’s costs or health facility. It also gives pragmatic and practical approaches applicable for implementing the project in health care settings (Jiang, Klein & Fernandez, 2018). However, for a project to be successfully implemented in a health care organization, every member of the organization must be willing to participate. As a result, project management often faces lots of challenges. The most common challenges faced may include the following;

The first challenge faced during project management in health care is the team’s lack of effective communication. For a successful project, the team needs to have effective communication between them. Communication is the biggest challenge because most participants may be distracted by their technological devices like mobile phones during the project.

Secondly, budget and costs are the next challenges that most project management in health care faces. Financial issues are a hindrance to the successful implementation of project management. In hospital facilities, finance is an issue because most projects are focused on implementing new devices or solving existing nursing problems. These often include costs that may be a challenge to the health care organization. Lastly, the health care organization may face a lack of cooperation from the nursing team. The nurses and staff may not be willing to participate and cooperate in the program management for various reasons. For instance, some may not understand the project’s importance because they are used to a specific routine hence may not want to change it.

Strategies you could use to combat these challenges.

The strategies I could use to combat these challenges may include the following;

First, for the lack of cooperation challenge, it will be essential to hear the nursing staff out and listen to their reasons for not cooperating in the project management. After which, I would explain to them the importance of the project and make them understand the various ways it will change their lives and the lives of their patients. Secondly, in terms of communication, the most suitable strategy would be asking the project managers always to ensure that they have transparent and timely ways of communicating with one another (Mishra, Boynton & Mishra, 2014). It is so because the project in question affects the patient’s lives and any miscommunication may lead to putting the patient’s life at risk. Managers could also use collaborative tools to enhance effective communication. Lastly, in budgeting, it would be recommendable to have proper planning for the project. This would include reasonable assumptions to avoid cost overruns. Combating these challenges will ensure the project goals are attained. It will also give managers an easier time working with the team and moving forward.
