Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
Discuss the concepts of Mean, Median, Mode, and Standard Deviation, including when each should be used, and evaluate the differences of each. How can knowing this information about data help us?
Describe an example from your own personal or professional experiences about using either Measures of Center (mean, median, or mode) or standard deviation, and discuss how knowing that information helped you.
ANSWER
Measures of Center and Variability
Mean
Mean is the average value of a set of any given numbers. Mathematically, the mean is the total of the numbers in a data set divided by the number of values in the data set. Thus the formula:
Mean= Sum of all terms÷ number of values in the set.
Knowing this information can help identify the expected value of the sums. As a primary school teacher, I used mean to analyze the average results of the whole classroom. This helped me compared their performance with the former year and identify whether they were performing at the expected level.
Median
This is the middle value of a set of numbers. To find the median, the set of numbers are arranged from the smallest to largest. Then, the middle number is identified as the median. For instance, 12, 16,23,9,15,11, 10, the median number is 9.
Finding median helps approximate average. As a teacher, I used a mean of seven students to help me approximate their average performance quickly. This saved me time and calculations.
Mode
Mode is the most common value in a set of numbers. It usually appears more than once. For instance, 12,16,23, 23, 15, 11. The numbers are first arranged from smallest to largest. Thus, 11, 12, 5, 16, 23, 23, the mode is 23 as it appears twice.
Finding mode helps identify the most frequent observation in distribution. As a teacher, I used mode to identify a mark that was scored by many students. This indicated that they either understood the same concepts or not.
Standard deviation
This is used to measure the variability of the data set. The formula is
Calculating standard deviation provides a complete [picture in research than mode.
