Locate the Mission, Vision, and Values statements of an organization of your choice and explain the statements’ importance. Does it seem relevant in today’s environment or is it outdated? Explain your reasoning. What improvements would you recommend for the vision statement?

Mission, Vision & Value Statements

The mission, vision, and value statements of any organization play an integral part in its relevance and identity. They create a clear picture of what the organization entails and the future goals and objectives they seek to achieve. A good example is the American Hearts Association. Formed in 1924, the AHA’s mission is “to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.” This mission is relevant in today’s environment, especially as the current world is primarily focused on pioneering a healthy generation and focusing on healthy living.  Most of the aging population, especially in the United States, have diseases caused by their lifestyle and unhealthy living. Thus, the organization seeks to encourage longer and healthy living for both the young and aging generations.

The vision of AHA is “As champions of health equity, by 2021, the American Hearts Association will advance in cardiovascular health for all, including identifying and removing barriers to healthcare access and quality”. This vision is relevant in today’s environment as innovation continues to introduce new methods and ideas in medicine for healthy living. The American health care system struggled with the delicate balance of quality healthcare access at a cost-friendly price for its citizens. The vision of AHA seeks to address this by looking for new ideas of promoting quality and advanced healthcare for all people and removing barriers like expensive healthcare access, therefore making it relevant to today’s environment.

In my opinion, I would implore the AHA to be precise in their vision. The vision mentions that the organization will identify and remove barriers to quality healthcare by 2024. This does not necessarily indicate what particular aspect the organization will address. Come 2024, this will give the organization the benefit of the doubt as they will not be held responsible for failing to address various barriers, as they can easily claim that the organization did not indicate what specifically they would tackle.
