Module 3 Everyday Population Health Journal

According to an article on KHN, the recent hurricane Ian has proven that coastal hospitals are not ready for climate change. According to Chang and Sausser (2022), hurricane Ian forced at least 16 hospitals from central to Southwestern Florida to evacuate their patients; some of the hospitals moved their patients before the storm, while others did so after the hurricane damaged their buildings, knocked out their power and running water. Many patients across Florida counties were evacuated from the hospitals for different reasons. The Florida hospitals needing to evacuate their patients due to the hurricane was enough evidence that the coastal hospitals are not prepared for climate change.

The hurricane affected people of different ages and all walks of life. However, upon giving it much thought, if hospitals did not have the resources to weather the hurricane, one is left wondering about the effects of climate change on the low-income population. Such a hurricane meant that most of those affected were those who could not afford to move to safer grounds. The homeless were also affected by the hurricane as they did not have somewhere to shelter from the hurricane, and some ended up being injured during the hurricane, and with the hospitals not being prepared, this presented a unique problem.

The Hurricane Ian problem in the coastal hospitals shows that the healthcare sector needs more attention, especially in disaster preparedness. The healthcare industry has been faced with one challenge after the other since the COVID-19 pandemic. This shows that the hospitals are not prepared with contingency plans, especially during a disaster. Hospitals need to be prepared to take care of their patients, and thus, the need to invest in the infrastructure of the hospitals to prevent a repeat of the same as the climate keeps changing, and hospitals need to be prepared.
