2. Section/Paragraph Two: Make a table with three columns listing all pieces in the order they were played (include any encores as well).

·         Column 1: Composition Title

·         Column 2: Composer’s full name followed by birth and death year in parenthesis. The composer is not always the performer.  The composer writes the music; the performer is who is executing it.

·         Column 3: Composition Style (musical era).  This should correspond to the dates when the compositions were written and musical era during which the composer lived.

·         For this class the style periods are as follows:

o    Medieval (450-1450)

o    Renaissance (1450-1600)

o    Baroque (1600-1750)

o    Classical (1750-1820)

o    Romantic (1820-1900)

o    Contemporary (1900-present day)

Example of Paragraph Two Column:

Composition Title Composer (birth year – death year) Composition Style (Musical Era)
The Erlking Franz Schubert (1797-1828) Romantic
Symphony No. 40  W. A. Mozart (1756-1791) Classical
Rhapsody in Blue George Gershwin (1898-1937) Contemporary
Continue until you have listed all compositions performed in the concert being viewed.

3. Section/Paragraph Three:  Write a description of each individual song or instrumental piece performed.

·         If you view a concert with 20 songs being sung, list all 20 and give a description of each, including the performer(s).

·         If you are viewing an orchestral concert with a symphony containing four movements as one of the works, describe each movement of the symphony, etc.

·         A few descriptive qualities to analyze include:

o    the character and overall musical style of the piece (is it a vocal/instrumental solo, part of a larger orchestral work, etc.?)

o    the emotion or mood of the piece

o    the tempo and dynamic level (is it fast, slow, moderate in tempo; Is it a monumentally loud piece or several dynamic changes from loud to soft? Elaborate!)

o    length of the piece (is it a solo piece, multi-movement, excerpt from an opera?)

·         For full credit, writing should be clear and eloquent, with no significant errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.

·         Be sure to organize this section with an efficient and appropriate listing of music performed (in other words, do not group 20 song descriptions into one large paragraph).

4.  Section/Paragraph Four: Describe the concert environment. Include the following:

·         A description of the physical layout of the performance hall or venue. Be sure to include the audience seating or standing in relation to the performers.

·         The clothing of the performers. Describe what people are wearing.  If the men and women have slightly different clothing, note that information.

·         The clothing and behavior of the audience members (if visible in the video). Was this a casual outdoor concert on lawn, a grand amphitheater, etc.?  Be descriptive.

  5. Section/Paragraph Five:  Write a paragraph describing your general reaction to the concert. Be sure to include:

ANSWER

Virtual Concert Report

The New York Times records Luciano Pavarotti 1986 Siver Jubilee Concert. The main event was at the Madison Square Garden on September 18th 1986. The performance medium was a symphony orchestral concert conducted by Emerson Buckley.

Composition Title Composer Composition Style
Mefistofele Arrigo Boito (1842-1918) Classical
Werther Jules Massenet  (1842-1912) Romantic
Tosca Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Romantic
La Boheme Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Romantic
La Gioconda Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886) Romantic
Dal piu remoto esilio Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) Romantic

By 1986, Luciano Pavarotti had been described as ‘the world’s greatest tenor’ with a great voice and an artistic gift with range and a vivid and likeable persona on stage. This was the same character in his 1986 Silver Jubilee Concert. His first performance, a classical, Mefistofele is an opera comprising five acts and later compresses to four acts and an epilogue was emotional and transported the audience to a different time and age. The second performance Werther is an opera in four acts based on a German novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goathe. The act by Pavarotti was beautiful and soft while at the same time tragic and sad as Sophie is left alone at night after Werther and Charlotte depart at night. Tosca, the third performance a three-act by Giacomo Puccini took the audience to a wildly political era during the Napoleonic wars, a time for plenty of political unrest. The performance was loud and incidental with Pavarotti’s voice echoing through the garden. Then almost instantly switches to a Bohemian age of art in Paris in La Boheme. The performance was romantic and sad as Pavarotti’s voice reverberated the tale between a poor poet and a poor seamstress. La Gioconda, a four-act opera was dark and frightful covering scenes of murder, suicide and sexual harassment. Even the performer’s voice changed into mystery and danger at this performance before lastly concluding with Dal piu remoto esilio comprising of three acts.

The singing was slick, eminently professional and dispassionate. Having performed the acts so many times before the singing appeared to have started being a routine and the emotion not drawn out. However, it was professional and for a person watching and listening to it for the first time, it was heavenly and well done. The setting as already pointed out was in a garden with a seated audience who often stood in appreciation of the performer’s talents.

I had fun watching the concert, Luciano Pavarotti by all standards deserves the legacy owing to his unnaturally brilliant voice and ability to capture emotion in his performances. The concert was grand as expected but I, however, wish I was able to see him live in performance. I was severely stunned by his ability to switch emotion in between performances and still create a magnificent show for everyone.
