Mid-wives

Introduction

All midwives offer labor, prenatal, postnatal, and delivery care to patients (Ranchoff and Declercq, 2020). However, the major differences are found in the scope of practice and education requirements. This paper will focus on the differences in roles linked to Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Professional Mid-Wife, and Certified Midwives. The paper will also illustrate how each role impacts the Family Nurse Practitioner practices.

Certified Professional Mid-Wife (CPM)

A certified professional midwife is a skilled, well-informed, and professional autonomous midwifery expert who has met the certification standards developed by the NARM (North American Registry of Midwives) thus qualified to offer the midwives care (Marzalik, Feltham, Jefferson and Pekin, 2018). The competency of certified professional midwives is established through education, training, and supervised clinical experience to ensure the necessary abilities and skills to practice competently.

Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)

A Certified Nurse Midwife is a accredited medical professional specializing in childbirth, reproductive health, writing prescriptions, and giving counsel. CNMs must complete the nurse-midwifery education program to obtain a license to practice as certified nurse-midwives (Farahi et al.,2020). CNMs practices include a complete series of key healthcare services for women from adolescence to menopause. These practices include care during pregnancy, pre-conception care, childbirth care, caring for the infant for the first 28 days, and postpartum care.

Certified Mid-Wives (CM)

A certified mid-wives acquire their certification through the American midwifery certification board. They have to meet the clinical competencies and skills the same as certified nurse-midwives (Cook, Avery, and Frisvold, 2014). The scope of practice of CM entails primary healthcare services for women. They provide necessary care, supervision, and advice in several settings.

As a family nurse practitioner, CPM broadens the scope of practice and leads to valuable career flexibility that enables one to offer maternal care and serve the whole community in any practice. CPM boosts the skills and knowledge of a family nurse practitioner since it’s the only midwifery credential that needs experience and knowledge in out-of-hospital settings. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, CNM allows physical examination, comprehensive assessment, treatment, and diagnosis. Education, support, and counseling for women and their families during the caregiving partnership include pregnancy, care during labor, birth, and postpartum. As a family nurse practitioner, the scope of practice of a certified midwife will enable managing and monitoring both the mother and the infant during and after delivery to ensure safety.
