Interprofessional Collaboration

Teamwork is an essential factor, especially in modern healthcare.  For patients to have positive inpatient outcomes, the healthcare professionals need to be working together as a team to help the patient receive the best care. The WHO defines interprofessional collaboration as the collaboration of professionals from different professional backgrounds working with patients and patient’s families to ensure that they receive quality care (Reeves et al., 2017).

Teamwork ensures that there are no errors and increases the safety of patients. an example of collaboration in healthcare is whereby a patient with chest pains is seen by the Emergency Department doctor who then sends the patient to a cardiologist who orders results from a radiologist, and once the results are out, both doctors can confirm whether what they suspected the patient was having was right. In this case, if the patient was having a heart attack, it can be controlled before it becomes fatal, and this has been done through the collaboration of different professionals (Wei et al., 2020). An emerging trend that will require a change in the nature of interprofessional collaboration is the use of social media. Social media can be used positively for interprofessional collaboration as healthcare professionals can consult with each other, but this might also need a balance as some cases require face-to-face interaction.

Some of the new healthcare innovations that incorporate interdisciplinary care delivery teams include the Accountable care organization (ACO), where different healthcare stakeholders collaborate to provide quality care for the patients (Nester, 2016). ACO involves different professionals in healthcare organizations such as burses, nutritionists, medical specialists, and nutritionists. ACO creates incentives to ensure that hospitals reduce unnecessary admissions and they adopt preventive care and not treatment. This is good for patients because it ensures that patients receive affordable and quality care. It also reduces errors and unnecessary readmissions.
