Two major themes were recognized learning to teach and build skills that will change the teaching practice and participants feeling better prepared and confident to teach. The study findings revealed that participants perceived older patients had varying conditions that hindered effective education thus lowering their health literacy. The study identified five themes; attitude to change, cognitive and physical functional barriers to comprehending teaching materials, family care givers, major contexts and strategies to enhance health literacy and teaching effectiveness. The findings indicated that poor health literacy is linked to poor quality of life and declines in psychological, physical and environmental factors. Therefore, health literacy impacts the quality of life in older people with long term conditions. The intervention trials show that learning is enhanced when the material is presented with an audio-visual rather than a visual or text format alone. End of life programs generally enabled students to learn concepts, acquire communication skills and improve administration of end of life care.
  Recommendations

 

Clinical settings should focus on eliminating the barriers in the context of patient education to improve health literacy. There is need to develop policies that will address health literacy challenges that are encountered by ageing population. Education intervention to boost health literacy should rely on educational resources with audiovisual elements that improve health literacy and self-efficacy among old patients. Clinical settings and educational facilities need to focus on educating nursing students on different care concepts to support the effectiveness of nursing practice in care provision.

The article supports the EBP since it focus on barriers of health education among nurses through a perception of nurses regarding to health literacy and education of older patients. The article focuses on the impacts of health literacy among old patients which underscores the importance of the EBP. The randomized controlled trials on education resources show that education interventions have the potential to improve health literacy among elderly population. Education interventions can reduce the barriers to patient education which will improve the quality of health care provision among elderly. According to the EBP, the barriers towards nursing practice and patient education for the elderly have existed for long. A need for diversification and change in approach would be vital in the system of care delivery among the elderly population. The article supports education intervention to improve nursing practice and patient care.
