Professional Identity of the Nurse: Scope of Nursing Practice

Professional nursing involves the protection, promotion, and optimization of health through the prevention of disease and injuries. It involves the alleviation of pain through diagnosing and treating individuals. Being a registered nurse does not end at diagnosing the patient and giving them medicine, it also involves being empathetic to the families of the patients, and also being a community advocate in promoting preventive care to the communities in a bid to alleviate pain and promote wellness (American Nursing Association). For a nurse to competently perform all the responsibilities they must have achieved several required elements to be licensed and to be given accreditation to work as nurses. They must also have the integrity required to be a nurse and they must also follow a certain code of ethics for them to effectively treat the patients and their families.

Code of Ethics

According to the American Nurses Association, ethical values are essential in the healthcare sector and for all healthcare workers but they are particularly important to nurses especially due to their role as caregivers. The nursing code of ethics is a guide for nurses on how they should carry out their responsibilities professionally and consistently with quality nursing care and their ethical obligations. There are four main principles that are part of the nursing code of ethics, autonomy, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence (American Nursing Association). These four principles are important and every nurse should be aware of them in their daily practice.

Autonomy is the principle that guides nurses in recognizing that each patient has the right to make individual decisions on their healthcare and treatment. The nurse as the patient advocate should ensure that all the information, education, and options are given to the patient, advise the patient on the best option and let the patient make the decision. Beneficence involves the nurse acting for the good and welfare of the patient. This means nurses are tasked with acts of kindness and charity towards the patients and the community. Justice involves treating all patients fairly regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. Non-maleficence means that nurses are required to ensure the safety of the patients and the community in the delivery of acre. They are required to do everything to ensure the patient is not harmed.

Standards of Practice

The standards of practice highlighted by the ANA provide guidelines for nursing performance. The standards of practice are rules on what it means to provide competent care and how the registered nurse is required to carry out care in accordance with what other nurses could have done in similar circumstances (American Nursing Association). As a registered nurse the nurse is required to think critically and analyze nursing practice. This means that the nurse is required to think strategically and use the best available evidence to make the best decision for the patient and provide safe, quality, and person-centered care. The registered nurse is also required to engage in therapeutic and professional relationships. In the hospital setting, the nurse is reared to collaborate with the other healthcare providers, and form mutual respect with the colleagues to ensure they are providing quality care for the patients.

Conclusion

Nurses are tasked with providing care to the community. As caregivers, they have to follow w a certain code of ethics to ensure that they are providing quality and equal care to their patients. They are also required to follow some standards of practice to ensure that they provide quality care to the community. Nurses often find themselves in situations where the patient might find it easier to talk to them. It is upon the nurse to listen to the patient’s needs and ensure that they are met and they are also providing quality care while enhancing patient safety.
