Personal Nursing Philosophy
Introduction
Personal nursing philosophy is considered as the contemplation of one’s principles, beliefs, and values within direct motivations of being part of the nursing profession. These are specific beliefs and thoughts that examine how an individual would offer care to individuals with a need for care. While formulating the nursing philosophy it is important to evaluate what guides the nursing practices. The purpose of this paper is to examine my nursing philosophy and how it can be applied in the nursing profession to improve health outcomes. My nursing philosophy is based on the provision of compassionate, empathetic, competent, and holistic care while maintaining accountability and professionalism.
Personal Nursing philosophy
My nursing philosophy is grounded on the fact that nursing practices should involve self-care since everyone wishes better care when they are sick at any point in their lives. Considerably, every nurse must ensure that the patients receive high-quality care to facilitate a better healing process. Transpersonal and self-care mediate the healing process transforming those that are suffering to wholeness. My nursing philosophy has played a great role in my nursing practices and my understanding of the nature of healing. All nurses have to motivate and empower a patient to gain their former strengths through their scientific skills and knowledge.
With regard to my nursing philosophy, every nurse should act as a care provider, patient advocate, manager, teacher, and leader. This is because the role of a nurse is to deliver high quality of care to achieve adequate health outcomes. According to my perception, the nursing profession is all about being compassionate and understanding human beings on all physical and emotional levels. This is because nurses are caregivers who help in the management of physical needs, treatment of health conditions, prevention of illness through observing and monitoring the patient to facilitate better treatment decisions.
My nursing philosophy has characterized the discipline of nurses through the meta paradigm concepts which include health, environment, person, and nursing. The meta-paradigm of nursing practice has been explored by various theorists who offer related information. The meta-paradigm considers the wellness and quality of care of the patient. The four meta-paradigms have been effective in the nursing process when caring for the patient to ensure patient-centered or personal care has been offered (Branch, Deak, Hiner, and Holzwart, 2016). The meta-paradigm of nursing has enabled a holistic care approach. Ideally, taking into consideration the environment, person, health, and practice of nursing which entails everything that goes into caring for the patients. Ideally, this comprehensive look at wellbeing and health allows the nurses to not only meet the physical needs but also the emotional needs of the patients. The ultimate goal is to enable the patient and nurses to manage health and wellbeing through personal connections.
Health entails a state of wellness and wholeness and is all about the quality of life and care (Sitzman and Watson, 2018). This view pays attention to the nature of the client in terms of social, physical, moral, and aesthetic realms. The level of wellness and health is an expression of the relation or interactive process between an individual and the environment. Nursing practice is all about people which means that care involves the whole patient. Human beings are the main concern in nursing but there is a need to consider the environment in which they live. It is important to look beyond the patient to different environmental factors that greatly influence the patients. This brings about the concept of holistic care which involves integrated care. The perception of nurses concerning the nursing paradigms as well as their knowledge and awareness on how to apply these concepts have influenced the professional development of nurses. I hold on to these beliefs which have played a great role in my motivation to attend to patients every day.
Nursing Theory
Nursing as defined by Jean Watson is caring that regenerates potentialities and life energies. Under the theory of human caring by Jean Watson, the larger component of nursing roles is not only to restore wholeness and help find meaning in their suffering and illness but also to facilitate harmonious balance in care (Naka and Hirokawa, 2020). Watson argued that holistic care is essential in the practice of caring by the nursing profession. The theory of human caring has brought about a focus on nursing as a novel discipline aimed at having knowledge, values, and practices within distinct ethics to society. The theory has enabled nurses to consider caring relationships that foster a reflective and meditative approach to care.
During my normal therapeutic relationships, I apply Watson Human Caring Theory to ensure that care is central to the experience of the patient. In my nursing profession, I have focused on performing care through the use of scientific knowledge and artistic approaches. Through Watson’s theory, care is always enhancement, preservation, and protection of human dignity (Hanley, Coppa, and Shields, 2017). Watson’s theory has emphasized on nursing practices that include interpersonal relationship management, caring moment, awareness as well as the healing process. About the theory, the humanistic features of nursing and care for patients have intertwined within the nursing practice creating a holistic approach. Watson supports the need for nurses to maintain and balance care through moral commitment, practicing wholeness to protect human dignity through transpersonal care. Within the Human caring theory, ten carative factors have been used in improving the patient-nurse interaction and enhance the actual patient care experiences (Pajnkihar, Štiglic, and Vrbnjak, 2017).
Human caring as the ultimate goal of nursing is the main focus of professional practices. This involves empathy, concern as well as a commitment to experiences of human health. Human care transactions can facilitate, enhance, protect, and preserve dignity and human worth. Human caring involves the will, values, commitment, knowledge, and communication to facilitate high-quality care. Considerably, the goal of nursing is to enhance health in human beings as well as caring for the ill, well, and dying through control over the health practices.
Populations disease has greatly influenced the nursing profession. Disease burden is considered as the impact of a certain health issue over a given population of people. This has increasingly challenged the competencies and values of nursing practice which aim at improving patient outcomes. Under such environments where the burden of disease is overwhelming, the provision of comprehensive care has not been fit but unrealistic. Ideally, the objective of holistic nursing is to enable patients to receive appropriate and integrated self-care into their lives.
Due to the challenges that came along with the holistic care approach in the population’s disease burden, the facilities demand that it is better to attend to all the patients in the little way possible to ensure that everyone receives care rather than focusing on all their health needs. Some challenges come with palliative care in the middle of a pandemic. For instance, the provision of holistic care during a pandemic is challenging since the disease burden does not allow clarity and dignity to patients and their families since there lacks time to normalize and have discussions when death is at the doorstep. Considerably, most people tend to seek comprehensive care during the end of life. In this situation, it is challenging to offer holistic care since the illness is already advanced. This makes it challenging for an individual to recover which leads to the decision to allow one to live their last day with dignity.
In my nursing practice am faced with challenges whose resolution leads to breaking my nursing philosophy. Within my usual routine duties, I encountered a patient who declined my services claiming that it was forbidden concerning their faith. However, the main problem was that I was the only nurse present within the facility. Therefore, failing to assist women would result in dreadful health outcomes. I proceeded to offer my service as any right-minded nurse would perform. My actions reflected my nursing philosophy which focuses on moral commitment to offer care and enhance human dignity through a transpersonal and heart-centered connection between the patient and the nurse. I have realized that offering holistic care in an empathetic and competent way is sometimes futile. A large number of patients have led to situations where there is only a need to offer flexible nursing care with the available resources.
Conclusion
In summation, the importance of nursing is to care for others through establishing personal contact and interpersonal connections with patients. my nursing philosophy pays attention to top holistic care that offers compassionate, empathetic, and professional care. Respectful and trustful interpersonal relationships during care have been considered essential in preserving human dignity during care. Patient satisfaction is considered as one of the indicators of efficient and quality care. The meta-paradigm of nursing and the human caring theory revolves around addressing the holistic aspects of nursing care. The interpersonal interaction between the nurse and patient is paramount in the overall nursing care. Nursing education needs to focus on individualized and holistic nursing care to improve health outcomes. However, in some situations such as epidemics, pandemics, and advanced illness, it has been challenging to achieve holistic care in nursing care.
