Cases of Violence Presented by Haque and Chinoy

Similarities

The cases presented by Chinoy and Haque are similar since both outline the challenges faced by women with regards to cultural ideologies. Haque and Chinoy have both offered essential insights on domestic violence against Muslim women. A similarity between the two is the specific type of brutality which is termed as honor killings. The two cases focus on fathers who both killed their daughters. For instance, Haque has explained that what happened to Asqa Parvez has been heavily affected by the media through the way they perceive the Islamic culture (Haque, 2010). They are unintentionally building a certain image towards the community since the media selects certain information, which is to be announced and included. Through the way the cases are presented in the media, they have led to dangerous backlash and led to blame towards a Muslim culture that is a vulnerable target. The two cases have indicated that honor killing and domestic violence are not a problem of the Muslim culture but are rather an extension of violence within communities in Canada.

Differences

Haque has focused on the image created towards the community by the media while Chinoy has focused on cultural ideologies that lead to certain actions. Haque states that islamic culture has been pointed out to be dangerous and has caused the community to be susceptible to marginalization and oppression. Haque has put more emphasis on the external factors and the cultural differences that the media outlets have tried to push so heavily. The media has portrayed the violence against Muslim women as a religious and cultural issue of racial others rather than an issue of the Canadians. Chinoy points out that the actions of Saba’s father are caused by the structure of public policies and implemented laws (Obaid-Chinoy, 2012). Saba’s father indicated that the situation was a result of the lack of honor and respect he got from Saba’s action. For instance, the Quran teaches one to choose and live freely and human beings have their rights whether man or woman. Haque indicates that the media’s dominant perception of Muslim culture while Chinoy indicates how cultural ideologies influence actions.
