The Health Illness Continuum

Introduction

The health Illness Continuum defines illness and health along a continuum with a great level of wellness and health at one side of the continuum as well as extraordinary levels of poor health and illness such as death on the other side of the continuum. The health and illness continuum illustrates the process of change whereby an individual encounters different states of illness and health that tend to fluctuate throughout their life. This paper will focus on the health-illness continuum and its relevance to patient care a perspective of a current state of health that is linked to the wellness spectrum.

The health Illness Continuum and Caring for Patients

The Health Illness Continuum was conceptualized by John Travis in 1972. The concept was explained through a graphical representation of illness and well-being which followed a theme that is not merely the absence of apparent symptoms and disease but also the presence of essential emotional, mental and social health for a person to be considered well and healthy. While conceptualizing the health-illness continuum, Travis believed that a medical approach that just cures the symptoms and disease into treating a patient is unsatisfactory (Falkner, 2018).

The health-illness continuum spectrum high degree of wellness is on the right end of the continuum spectrum while the degree of premature death or illness is on the left side. The Health-Illness Continuum is an essential tool for healthcare givers to utilize for themselves and the patients. Considerably, understanding the progression from pre-mature death up to the high level of wellness can enable the healthcare provider to explain a disease process (Salmond and Echevarria, 2017). Additionally, the care providers can understand the necessary care that will accompany the process not only for the patient but also for the family. The health and illness continuum is essential in promoting treatment which boosts the well-being of an individual before presenting with the symptoms and signs of illness.

A nurse plays an essential role in ensuring that the patient moves towards the health and well-being side (Salmond and Echevarria, 2017). For instance, a journey for a diabetic patient varies depending on the kind of care given. If the patient only takes their medication without taking other actions concerning their disease process, then they remain at the neutral point of the continuum. However, if the same patient takes their medication and begins to exercise regularly, and follow a diabetic diet then they are planning for a positive movement down the continuum.

Understanding The Health Illness Continuum to Promote Value and Dignity

The perspective of the health-illness continuum is essential to consider about health and the human experience while caring for patients.  For instance, nurses have a role of educating patients that even if they have a chronic illness, they still can afford high-quality life. When patients are being diagnosed nurses should educate them about the health-illness continuum. Through improving awareness and education of the population, many people tend to understand that wellness includes physical and mental health.

Understanding the health-illness continuum is essential since it draws a link between the wellness and treatment paradigm. The nurses have relied on this tool to help patients plan, visualize and achieve their goals for a healthier lifestyle (Mariano, 2017). Understanding the continuum enables the nurses to move the patients beyond the optimal level of health which is achieved through education, awareness, and individual growth.

Overall Health State

Reflecting on my overall health state, I can state that I have moved across the health-illness continuum. This is because I have experienced various factors in my life where some compromised while others supported my well-being. Some of the factors that have influenced my overall health and wellbeing are sedimentary lifestyle and poor diet. I have been consuming a lot of food with sugar, cholesterol, and caffeine which have had an overall influence on my well-being.

The other effect is the sedimentary lifestyle since my overall lifestyle has not been active at all. For instance, I have been spending most of my time indoors doing research and play games. However, I also have factors that have improved well-being such as a healthy relationship with my family and friends. I have had a good relationship with my family and friends who have enabled me to maintain my mental and emotional health.

Available Resources to Support Health and Wellness

Some of the resources available to support my health and wellness on the health-illness continuum. Community-based services, disease management programs, and case management services can be utilized for patients with chronic illnesses since they lead the nurses to quality initiatives designed to meet specific group needs (Haldane et al., 2020). Healthcare settings have a patient-oriented system of care that spans throughout and consists of integrated mechanisms and services that guide patients over time. Public activities such as therapy and meeting a life coach will be effective in moving forward and accepting the psychological diagnosis. Working with a therapist or life coach will enable a patient in staying on the right side of the health-illness continuum.
