Background Study
In the recent past, healthcare organizations have been exposed to various acts of violence from the patients, colleagues, and the persons responsible directly or indirectly for the perpetrators of this heinous act. In the scholarly articles computed by (Wallace 2019) and (Longton 2015), the two scholars have given a deep thought on the leading causes of these violent related cases that affect our healthcare workers. These studies’ primary objective is to highlight the violence suffered by healthcare practitioners in healthcare organizations to formulate measures that can be taken to alleviate the occurrence of these violent attacks on the workers.
Wallace’s study is pivotal in illuminating the different kinds of violence that healthcare workers suffer. At the same time, it highlights the different prevention measures that can be put in place to avert these unfortunate occurrences. Lowering the acts of violence will improve the state of care provided to patients since most of these attacks are physical or psychological. This study conducted by Wallace is significant since it can be used to draw preventive measures used to assess the causes of violence among healthcare practitioners (Kennedy & Kennedy-Baker 2020). The study is based on the data collected from different hospitals that offered insight into their health workers’ different types of violent attacks.
On the other hand, conducted a study on the violence at the workplace suffered by psychiatrist’s aides. This study focuses more on the violence inflicted on women as healthcare practitioners; it aims to highlight data used to indicate various violent actions on women and the laws that can be established to combat these forms of violence in the health care organizations in the United States. The main aim of this study conducted by Longton is to reliable research evidence on measures that can be taken in violence prevention while at the same time increasing the understanding of how various laws can be established and utilized in defending and safeguarding all healthcare workers (Longton 2015). This study proves to be significant in nursing as it aims to create a favourable working environment in healthcare organizations, which will subsequently improve the nature of service delivery between the affected parties. The study is also instrumental in the formulation of laws that can be used to combat violence in workplaces such as psychiatric centres and hospitals majorly affected by abuse through violence. In summary, this study tries to answer how the two articles by Wallace and Longton support the violence against healthcare stall.
Application in Nursing
Wallace’s scholarly article helps highlight the different forms of violence that the workers are exposed to. According to Wallace, four types of violence are directly linked to health workers; the violence on a health worker by a non-associated person, violence involving a patient and a worker, violence from a current or former employee, and a perpetrator that has a personal connection with the worker (Kennedy & Kennedy-Baker 2020). This article also gives an insight on the most likely causes of these acts of violence, with working in a stressful environment as the number one cause of violent acts in a healthcare setting. Wallace’s article can be used to answer what causes these violent acts among the affected parties. The postulate can be utilized to improve service delivery standards and set up regulations that can minimize occurrences of this problem. For instance, the workplace can be made less stressful by designing a workplace prevention plan and ensuring that the healthcare practitioners are provided with all the equipment they need to successfully perform their tasks with ease without causing major infractions between themselves and the affected parties.
In Longton’s research, the illnesses and injuries linked to violent actions are somewhat dissimilar between different classes of workers. Psychiatric aides are twice most susceptible to violent attacks from their patients than the violence suffered by the psychiatric technicians. In this article, Longton pinpoints the plights of the psychiatric aides, and they are privileged to take on the responsibility of caring for the patients in various hospitals. It also displays the statistics in the frequency of attacks they are exposed to; these findings can be used to develop measures that can be put in place to shield the psychiatrist technicians and their aides from these violent aggressions from patients (Colling & Colling 2001).
Study Method
The two scholarly articles utilized two different methods in the collection of data from the sample space. Wallace utilized interviewing as the tool for data collection, whereas Longton embraced survey research in his article. Interviews are essential in collecting in-depth data; there is a form of personal appeal when using interviews as a tool for research and data collection. With interviewing, the thoughts, opinions, feelings, and experiences of people are easily gauged. The collection of data through conversing with the respondent promotes collecting elicit data about a sensitive issue; thus, the significant difference between interviewing and the use of surveys as a method of data collection. In surveying, Longton carried out his research using surveys to draw a meaningful conclusion from his study. These two methods are different in that survey employs simple information captured in numerical or short-term form. At the same time, interviews are formulated to capture discursive or complex information on a participant’s thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and beliefs.
The use of interviews as a study method enabled Wallace to enjoy the advantage of using a small number of respondents who can be so effective in explaining a particular situation. There is also an opportunity to seek clarifications on specific issues during the process if required. However, interviews are susceptible to bias. Also, difficulties linked to the arrangement of appropriate timing with respondents to conduct the interview might prove hard to ignore. Longton’s use of surveys also offers in-depth information about the underlying motivations and reasoning. It is an effective way to gather data from a large cohort; the concept of generalizability is a very reliable technique of inquiry during the interpretation and analysis of the data. However, this method is marred with the problem of validity. Survey questions are standardized, which proves challenging to ask anything other than the designated general questions that will allow a range of people to understand. Therefore, results may not be valid, limiting comprehensive analysis.
Results of the Study
In his findings, Wallace summarizes the four significant types of violence linked to health workers; a non-associated person with the worker, the patient, current or former employee, and a perpetrator with a personal connection with the worker. In his report, he attributes a stressful working environment as the leading cause of violence in a healthcare setting. Wallace recommends control measures such as designing a workplace prevention plan as one of the ways that would help avert violence in healthcare organizations. On the other hand, Longton provides findings from his study whereby by the use of a survey, he concludes that the psychiatrist technicians and the psychiatrist aides are also exposed to this violence, exhibited by the illnesses and injuries linked to these violent actions. The psychiatrist aides are twice as much more likely to experience violent abuse than the technicians in the year 2011.
These two studies are essential in highlighting the safety measures that need to be installed in the healthcare organizations, which will prevent or reduce to an insignificant amount the occurrences of such attacks (Siegel 2018). The studies can also be used in benchmarking to promote a safe working environment that will consequently reduce the frequency of these violent attacks in the workplace.
Finding Comparison
The most suitable anticipated outcome from the two studies is for the governing bodies to put measures that improve service delivery and protect the healthcare workers from such kind of abuse. These studies can serve as benchmarking schemes that can be acted upon to improve and design a workplace prevention plan that will shield patients, nurses, and technicians from any form of violence within the healthcare organization. These articles’ outcomes are similar to my anticipated outcomes since they all target to protect the healthcare workers and improve the facilities that these workers use in attending to and caring for their patients.
