Nursing burnout has been a consequential and deleterious syndrome that impacts not only the nurses but also the patient and the organization in which the nurses’ labor. Ideally, the nurses tend to experience burnout due to overwhelming and excessive demands in their field. This is because nurses are constantly working in stressful working environments that require physical and mental, emotional, and spiritual strength (de Oliveira et al., 2019). The purpose of this project is to examine the impact of nurse burnout on patient care in skilled nursing facilities. Nurses that experience burnout shows less willingness and ability to deliver high-quality care.

The main objectives of this project are to draw emphasis on burnout problems among nurses, the causes of burnout, and examine what can be done to prevent and manage this problem. The project will focus on a critical exploration of the current and existing research relevant to examining the prevalence of Nurse Burnout. The research study design was adopted to provide knowledge from research articles that focus on burnout in nursing. The articles will be obtained from academic databases such as Sage and Science Direct, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, and PubMed.
The project will also rely on a cross-sectional study that will examine the causes of nurse burnout. This will examine the work-related factors as determinants of burnout among nurses on various hospital units such as maternal wards, intensive care units, and pediatric care units. The primary data will be obtained from nurses working within skilled nursing facilities and secondary data from the published information and hospital records.
The project will also use quantitative empirical studies that measure the effectiveness of coping strategies among nurses with burnouts. The studies will offer different intervention actions of burnout in Nurses. Considerably, an integrative review of literature will offer prevention strategies for burnout among nurses who will promote the health of nurses and lower burnout. Eligibility and screening steps will be conducted to include empirical studies that will effectively offer suitable prevention strategies.

Over the past decades, there has been growing researches and policies that focus on how work organization characteristics have influenced the different nursing outcomes. These have defined burnout as a chronic response to work-linked stress comprising of three dimensions depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and personal accomplishment. Burnout has been considered a nursing outcome in the nursing studies that focus on understanding the effects of inputs and context on outcomes in healthcare settings. Burnout has been characterized by negative alterations in behaviors and attitudes towards clients over time and is often linked to job satisfaction (Dall’Ora, Ball, Reinius, and Griffiths, 2020). Burnout has also been theorized as a psychological syndrome that comprises emotional exhaustion, a tendency to depersonalize client experiences, and a lower sense of personal accomplishment (Guoet et al., 2018). Burnouts have influenced the job performance of the nurses who work with physicians in challenging circumstances.
Ideally, nursing has been one of the most exhausting professional practices in a highly stressful environment. Some of the nurses have tried to manage and deal with burnouts. However, insufficient nurses, long-term working conditions, and poor communication have led to working environments that lead to emotional and physical worn-outs (Wint, 2021). Nurses encounter the dilemma of empathy, being human, and sensitive to many responsibilities to patient care.
In response to Covid-19, a survey on acute care nurses in Alabama has shown high levels of nurse burnout which has been a great predictor of medication errors (Khosravi, Ghiasi, and Ganjali, 2021). All types of burnout, such as work-related, burnout, and client-related, have been linked to medication administration errors (Montgomery et al., 2021). The pandemic has made things worse with increased demand for nursing care services, leading to the nursing shortage. The pandemic has also increased the stress levels of the nursing staff in Alabama. Increased workload has directly impacted performance and productivity, causing fatigue, absenteeism, and turnover (Ali, Astin Cole, and Sa’d Hamasha, 2020).
Various strategies can be employed to lower burnout among nurses. Magtibay, D. L., Chesak, Coughlin, and Sood (2017) reported that training programs that consist of teaching professional techniques of dealing with cognitive behaviors and challenges in the nursing profession could help in reducing stress. These programs should focus on developing positive professional thinking, professional self-image, and professional goals that increase job satisfaction, thus reducing turnover and absenteeism due to burnout (Zhang, Song, Jiang, Ding, and Shi, 2020). Changes in the working environment that favor professional practice can lead to low burnout rates (Aryankhesal et al., 2021). Programs such as Nurses living fit that involve physical activities can effectively increase a healthy lifestyle for nurses, thus reducing burnout (Davidson et al., 2020).
Conclusion
Burnout is one of the major concepts that have sustained the interest of researchers and nurses for several decades. The burnout concept has been highly relevant to the general workforce and particularly the nurses. Studies have indicated that nurse burnout has been a great prediction of medical errors and poor quality care. Burnout has been linked to the highly stressful working environment, mental exhaustion of nurses, high workload, and low staffing, which increase the prevalence of burnout. Health facilities should rely on coping strategies such as changing the nurses’ working environment, training, and programs that reduce work-related stress and increase job satisfaction.
