Nursing Burnout in Skilled Nursing Facilities

Literature Review

One of the significant challenges facing nurses in health care institutions is burnout.  According to Dall’Ora, Ball, Reinius, & Griffiths (2020), this includes being in a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress.  Burnout in nurses occurs when they get overwhelmed, become emotionally drained, and cannot meet constant demands when taking care of the patients.  According to Kang (2015) there are no sustainable solutions that have been discovered yet, hence a need for continuous research on ways of attaining sustainable solutions to this common challenge in skilled nursing facilities (Miller, 2011).  Skilled nursing facilities are the most affected, where they have the highest rate of nurse burnout in any setting. The literature review was conducted using both electronic and manual resources.

Project Proposal Topic

The topic of the study is the evaluation of the cause of nursing burnout in skilled nursing facilities and the most sustainable solutions to the challenge. First, the subject will seek to understand the factors that lead to burnout of nurses.  It will also seek to know how burnouts affect the nurses and derail them from attaining their set goals and objectives.  After understanding this, it will seek to identify suitable solutions that will help deal with the issue.

Findings

The literature has shown a significant cause for worry since burnout amongst nurses increases at a higher pace. A big reason identified as a way skilled nursing facility have a higher burnout is the lack of professional resources and training managers (Rachel & Francesco, 2018). This mainly occurs during the nighttime, where some nurses go for long hours without resting (Aquino, Lee, Spawn, & Bishop-Royse, 2018).  Working overtime also significantly leads to burnout amongst the professionals. This dramatically affects the quality of the patient care offered.

Conclusion

It is manifest that Nursing burnout is a significant issue that ought to be addressed by health institutions. There is a need for the facilities to manage their staffing shortcomings to get sustainable solutions to the matter (Kang, 2015). The leadership of the facilities and the workers need to work together to find a sustainable solution.
