Example of participatory planning

One of my close friends was involved in participatory panning which entailed involving the community in the management of a neighboring forest. The process entailed the incorporation of various stakeholders who included the locals, the tourism enterprises, the forest management board, and private conservationists. Each of the involved parties had diverse goals, with the common goal being to ensure that the forest is protected against illegal logging and forest misuse. According to my colleague, in the planning, there was the use of a participatory approach and computerized tools such as decision support systems, which aided in creating balance in the diverse priorities of the involved parties. The use of computerized tools helped in group decision support, group thinking, and sharing of ideologies on matters regarding forest protection, future recommendation by parties, and coming up with the most effective policies that would help in ensuring that the forest was protected.

 Benefits 

Participatory planning was important in that it brought together different stakeholders who would work to ensure that their common goals were attained. It also helped in ensuring that the needs of the communities are met by allowing for collaborations with other vital stakeholders. For this case, the participatory planning greatly helped in creating awareness, leading to better conservation of forests.

 Drawbacks 

One of the major challenges experienced included ensuring that all community members were able to get involved in the participatory planning. Another challenge was having different stakeholders with differing goals, hence limiting the speed of the planning process. A final challenge experienced is the lack of funds to help in the implementation of the plan, which could lead to participation fatigue and also frustration among the community members.
