Plato’s Republic, Book II

It is challenging to understand the concept of Justice. Justice could be based on individual human behavior, or it could be an all-encompassing concept without the variation for all beings. This study will discuss and review what philosopher Socrates and his friends suggest is to be. The review is based on the book Plato’s The Republic, book two.

Plato

Plato is one of the most famous students of philosopher Socrates from Greek. Plato was born in Athens, Greece, in the year 427 BC. Plato wrote many works about his teacher, Socrates. Plato published most of what is studied today about Socrates. Plato came up with the idea of education and pedagogy, which is practiced to day. The platonic method, also sometimes referred to as Plato, also developed the dialectic.

Plato’s The Republic

The republic is one of the works published by Plato. Most of the lessons published in the book were learned from his teacher Socrates. The republic is considered the first book published with a better understanding of the platonic method (Thaler, 2017). The book shares ideas on how political science could resume through the ideas on Justice. There’s an imaginary City setting that has been used in the book to illustrate what Justice is. The City is divided into classes, which include the guardians, the rulers, and the producers. The producers are responsible for the provision of services and goods to the City people. The rulers are blessed with the understanding of wrong and right. The City and its people are taken care of by the guardians.

Book Two

Book two of Plato’s republic attempts to define right. According to Plato, good can be organized into three categories. The first category is being good for the sake of being right. The second category is being good because of the benefit that comes out of it. The third category is being good for the for the sake of being good, after all people benefit from it (Thaler, 2017).   Socrates argues that a just City should first be defined to define a just individual.
