Causes and Consequences of the Syrian Civil War

Facts

The ongoing Syrian Civil wars commenced in 2011, where there were democracy demonstrations in The Southern City of Deraa. The uprisings inspired the war in other neighboring nations which were against repressive leaders. Protests emerged urging the president to resign, where they spread nationwide (BBC News 1) . According to the United Nations, the civil war is the worst human-made disaster since World War II. The conflicts escalated to an armed conflict, where there were targeted strikes on the health care facilities and an increase in terrorism and chemical attacks (Cheung, Kube and Tay 2).  During the conflict, at least 400 000 people have lost their lives, where there are also around 5.6 million refugees due to the war.

Analysis

As a result of the Syrian Civil war, there have been widespread adverse consequences to the country. This is in terms of the citizens’ health and wellbeing, where there is high access to mortality and displacement. Infectious diseases in the country have been on the rise since the war began, where many have died due to the loss of access to treatment.  The war also brought damage to residential buildings and food distribution systems, which disrupted the basic needs for food and shelter in the country (BBC News 1).  The problem of the civil war has been severe to the families, where families and communities in the country have been destroyed, leading to civilians getting displaced and having to flee in pursuit of peace,

Opinion

Unfortunately, nothing has been done to stop the ongoing civil war in Syria. It is the role of international bodies such as the UN and other nations to solve these issues and ensure that Syrians enjoy peace at last.  There will also be a need for an accelerated peace process to restore the wellbeing of Syria.
