Global Poverty Causes

Facts

Approximately 10% of the global population; lives in extreme poverty due to several drivers and factors.  This accounts for around 600 million people, who survive on only $1.90 a day or less (Myers 1). In 1990, the figure of people living below overy6 levels was 1.8 billion people, and hence some progress has been made (World Vision 1).  However, the number remains high, where a sizeable number of this population succumbs due to lack of food.

Analysis

 Multiple factors are contributing to the world poverty level problem. The first issue is inequality, where there are systemic barriers leaving groups of people without a representation or voice.  For a population to avoid poverty, all groups need to be included in the decision-making processes.  Another factor that has contributed to increasing cases of poverty is conflict. Many nations, including Syria, Somalia, and Iraq, among many others, are in deep conflicts. This is since conflict brings nations to a halt, leading to the destruction of infrastructure and causes people to flee. In the last ten years of conflict in Syria, all its middle class has been destroyed, and almost 80% of its population lives below the poverty line (Myers 1).  Other causes include poor governance, draught, and little or no access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Opinion

It is unfortunate that many people live in extreme poverty and can barely afford a meal a day. The biggest factor that should be blamed is poor governance because more can do to alleviate the problem with the right leaders. There is, therefore, a need for world leaders to come together and undertake stringent measures to ensure that the poverty levels are reduced.
