Presidential versus Parliamentary Democracy

Fact

There is a significant difference between a presidential democracy and a parliamentary one. The United States has a presidential system entirely different from the parliamentary one in the United Kingdom. The significant difference between the two is that the president is the head of government, where the people elect him, and the executive is not responsible for the legislature (Paliwala 1). For the parliamentary one, the executive power is vested in the legislature, where the parliament elects the prime minister.

Analysis

In a presidential system, the executive and the legislature are different organs, unlike in the parliamentary one, where the executives are mandated with legislation.  The residential system’s organs of the government are separated from each other and are also constitutionally independent (Szilagyi 307). The president is the head of state and is mandated with the role of enforcing laws.  This system rejects legislative supremacy, where it is designed for full republics without a constitutional monarchy like the United States.  On the other hand, in the parliamentary system, the executive derives its demographic legitimacy from its power to command the legislature’s confidence (Paliwala 1). The head of state is separate from the head of government. Countries with such systems can be either constitutional monarchies or parliamentary republics. For a constitutional monarchy, the head of state is the monarch, with the head of government being the parliament. Some of the nations with such systems include the UK, Japan, Sweden, and Denmark.

Opinion

`          I believe that if both systems are well structured and have great characters as leaders, they can significantly govern the nation. Despite the types of systems, the abilities of the leaders to deliver the wants of the citizens will determine the country’s success. Failure by the leaders will derail the efforts of a nation despite the structure of governance.
