Social Psychological Research on Attraction

Sharing interests, life experiences, and traits spark a unique attraction. Considerably, I am instinctively attracted to others with whom we share similar interests, traits, and life experiences. For instance, meeting a person from the same hometown who shares similar hobbies, wristwatch or same birthday increases liking. Additionally, shared attitudes cause individuals to bond more. Interpersonal attraction has played a great role in establishing positive feelings about another individual.

Interpersonal attraction entails attraction between individuals that lead to the development of romantic and platonic relationships. This differs from perceptions like physical attractiveness and focuses on what is attractive or not.  Some of the factors that have influenced how am attracted to another person include reciprocity, proximity, and similarity. I am likely to become friends with an individual within my geographical location. In terms of similarity, I am likely to choose friends with similar characteristics such as race, religion, age, education, personality, attitude, intelligence, and social class. Therefore, I am attracted to a person that tends to reciprocate my liking.

Most of my friendships have grown apart since things that previously put us close and magnetized our friendship no longer exist. My connection to them is broken by a change in contexts and similarities which were the cause of attraction. This is because friendship is a unique attraction and mutual affection between people. Considerably, people tend to grow apart for many reasons. Some of the causes of ending a friendship are imbalanced care, feeling misunderstood, lack of communication, quarrels, feeling disrespected, hurt, or minimized. Additionally, friends value and trust one another and hope to share to seek comfort and insight. However, oversharing has been overwhelming and rapture the connection. For instance, the perception of broken trust and betrayal may lead to a crack that may negative to the connection. Ideally, all the reasons that friendship began are yet the reasons as to why friendships end.
