Fundamental Attribution Error

Fundamental attribution error is the tendency of an individual to overemphasize personality-based explanations for actions observed in others. This is when an individual has a cognitive bias to assume that the person’s action depends on what kind of individual they are. One of my friends in school always gets lower grades and fails exams. His scores are always below the minimum cut off criteria. I have thought that he doesn’t want to ready; he is lazy or engaged in other activities other than studying. All these, among many other judgments and thoughts about him, were created in my mind without being aware of the person’s condition. Certain things affect her studies, which may lead to a challenge in retaining information, concentrating in class, and reading. For instance, circumstances at home may be preventing him from studying enough for the forthcoming test. In this scenario, I made a fundamental attribution error since I was attaching certain individualities to an individual grounded on the incident while not being alert of the situation.

Dispositional and Situational Factors

Dispositional and situational factors influence how one views the behavior of others concerning the immediate surroundings and environment. Considerably, it is less likely to identify the situation factors of other individuals. The situational factor tends to offer an excuse for a certain action, while disposition factors tend to blame inappropriate action. Dispositional explanations for the scenario have focused on an individual’s internal characteristics that lead to failing exams, such as low interest and laziness. For instance, lazy students tend to relax and pay less attention to the studies which leads to low academic performance. Socio-economic status, health and learning disorders, and home environment are some of the situational factors that may have influenced the student’s academic performance. The situational and dispositional factors influenced my perception of my friend’s poor academic performance.
