In this module, you read about Learning Disabilities and the importance of early intervention, especially in terms of Learned Helplessness. Pick one Learning Disability and write about the symptoms and how to identify children exhibiting them, as well as possible interventions and treatment.
This response should be a minimum of 300 words and use proper APA Style documentation. Be sure to support your argument with ideas from your own independent research. All information must be cited in the body of the text (ideas as well as writing) even if not directly quoting.
ANSWER
Dyslexia and the Importance of Early Intervention
Dyslexia is a learning disability that entails difficulty in reading due to problems of recognizing speech sounds and learning as well as how they relate to each other. Dyslexia impacts the brain areas that process language. Dyslexia present at birth has multifactorial etiology such as low birth weight or premature birth, inheritance of genes linked to dyslexia, variations in the parts of the brain that are linked to comprehension and reading (Snowling et al., 2019). The challenge in learning to read can be linked to hereditary factors and other impact to brain development. Children with dyslexia have challenges with tasks that contain too many words and the speed they take in processing information. Individuals with Dyslexia have reported stress, anger, shame, embarrassment, isolation, guilt, aggression, low motivation, insecurity and anxiety.
The signs and symptoms of dyslexia may be observed early in the preschool age and school going teenagers and children. The earliest signs of dyslexia are seen at the age of 1 or 2 years when the child is first learning to make sounds (Adlof and Hogan, 2018). Some of the signs and symptoms of dyslexia include difficulty in reading aloud, spelling problems, mispronouncing words, avoiding activities that involve reading and labor intensive writing and reading. Relatively, children have a delay in learning, memorizing, late talking, and slowly learning new words. Therefore, when dyslexia is evident in childhood it means that a child will have problems in processing rapid language, taking notes and spend longer in their written.
Early detection of this learning disability can offer support to learn the new words with other method to help improve. Effective interventions of dyslexia include training in letter sounds, phoneme awareness and linking letters through reading and writing at a suitable level of reinforcing emergent skills (Hettiarachchi, 2021). Children that don’t utter their first words until fifteen months have a high risk of developing dyslexia. Early intervention is effective since it facilitates instruction that can prevent dyslexia, mitigate language development delays and speech development issues.
