Selectively Social Politics Differing Roles of Media Use On Political Discussion

In the modern media setting, people receive several options for political information. People are now using multiple media sources to obtain information regarding different aspects of politics. The main aim of Ponder and Haridakis (2015) was to examine how certain media sources influence political discussion with people from a similar political party and others from different parties. The study was guided by gratification and uses perspectives that emphasize the role of the use in media influences and how certain user background characteristics and motives for using social media and traditional media for political information work together to impact political discussion. The study shows how behavioral and attitudinal effects positively influence political knowledge.

Uses and gratification help understand how and why people actively seek out certain media to meet their needs. Uses and gratification help understand the effects of media on people and how their personal needs get satisfied (Ponder and Haridakis, 2015). Therefore, uses and gratifications focuses on the media effects perspective that focuses on what individual do with the media information they receive, thus suggesting that individual psychological and social differences, media use motives, and use of media impact media exposure. Studies on uses and gratifications emphasize that people’s psychological characteristics are sources for the desires and needs people seek to satisfy through social media and other communication channels. The desires and needs manifest in people’s motives for using social media. For instance, there are a variety of possible desires and motives that people have while seeking political fare.

Investigating Grit and Its Relation to College Student’s Self-Regulated Learning and Academic Achievement

In the last two decades, self-regulated learning has emerged as a major framework used to examine, understand and improve students functioning within academic contexts. Individual differences are defined by many traits such as intelligence, personality, motives, and achievements, which are important in influencing students’ academic achievement. Studies that have integrated these perspectives indicate that accounting for stable individual differences and self-regulated learning offers a better understanding of academic performance.

Wolters and Hussain (2015) focused on a study on the relation between self-regulated learning, grit, and academic achievement. Grit is considered a personal trait level of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Therefore, grit can be considered a stable characteristic of an individual, similar to the traditional personality attitudes and traits across different contexts. The study investigated grit and how it’s related to self-regulated learning. The study results show that the perseverance of effort aspect of grit was adaptive and consistent for all indicators of self-regulated learning. Grit is a mediator between students’ background and personal characteristics and their performance within certain contexts. Personality traits, dispositions, and other stable individual variations such as grit are viewed as potentially influencing the beliefs, attitudes, cognitive processes, and behaviors that contribute to self-regulated learning.

Contributions and Limitations

The studies have made significant contributions to the understanding of human behavior. For example, studies on self-regulated learning have helped understand how noncognitive biased trait, grit, affects academic performance. Similarly, research on uses and gratifications has helped us to better understand how particular sources of media influence behavior. Despite these impressive contributions, psychology also has its limitations. One important limitation is that much psychological research often relies on self-report measures, which can be biased and may not reflect real-world behavior.

Future Problems in Psychology

One of the biggest problems that will face psychology in the future is the replication crisis. This refers to the finding that many psychological studies cannot be replicated, thus the concerns of credibility of findings in psychological research (Wiggins and Christopherson, 2019). This is a major problem because it means that much of the research that has been conducted is not reliable. Therefore, psychologists cannot trust the results of their research since the scientific studies are impossible or difficult to reproduce.
