Question: Socioeconomic status is associated with one’s health. However, wealth—the total amount of valuable financial assets (e.g., money/savings, home and car ownership, capital such as real estate, stocks, businesses)—is highly correlated between parents and their children. Please discuss some ways that parental wealth may be transmitted to their children and come to impact children’s future opportunities and health?

Socioeconomic Status and Health
The relationship between children’s health outcomes and parental wealth is strong and well established. Family and parental economic resources such as wealth have causal effects, whether in abundance or during financial constraints. Parental wealth is transmitted to children through inheritance, and as a component of family background, plays a vital role in defining wealth transmission. Parental wealth transmission to children has both positive and negative impacts. Wealth promotes risks in physical and mental health outcomes. For instance, Lue et al. (2008), in her article, states that socioeconomic status has many dangers, including physical diseases among people living below or above the poverty line (Leu, 2008). Immigrant children who arrive in new countries may suffer from mental issues due to high poverty levels, in cases when they lack the parental wealth to support their living standards. Children who suffer emotional and cognitive distress due to increased poverty levels have less or no wealth transmitted to them from their parents, which makes them susceptible to mental and physical pain in their early adulthood (Leu, 2008).
On the other hand, according to Gordon-Larsen et al. (2003), high income and wealth are associated with increased obesity and overweight cases among children only among parents with low education (Gordon-Larsen, 2003). This shows that the association between mental and physical risks among children and parental wealth transmission depends on the level of education. Parents with high education and have wealth are likely to educate their children, which results in positive health outcomes. In addition, Senn et al (2014), argues that socioeconomic status relates to stress and health behavior outcomes. Children from wealthy parents are likely to have lower stress levels than children from disadvantaged family backgrounds, as wealthy parents and backgrounds ensure their children are financially stable (Senn, 2014). Rich children do not have to worry about money seeking, as their parents provide wealth, stability, and opportunities are more available. Children from impoverished families are susceptible to numerous stressors as they seek job opportunities and economic stability. Overly, health among children with or without wealthy backgrounds is associated with health behaviors, psychological distress, stressors, availability levels of social support, and coping strategies used. This is because whether children have wealth transmitted to them or not, how they manage the wealth may result in both negative and positive health outcomes.
