There is No Such thing as Not Voting

Exercising the right to vote is crucial in maintaining a fair democracy, and each vote matters in contributing to leadership in a country. In his video “There’s no such thing as not voting,” Eric Leu agrees that people should vote to fulfill their civic duty and responsibility as adults (TED Talk, 2016). He further explains that it is time to build a positive culture of voting and revive the joy in voting.

Most people fail to vote due to the rigged game of public policy; others think their vote does not matter. However, regardless of all these, voting does matter because it is a self-fulfilling act of belief (TED Talk, 2016). Voting feeds the spirit of mutual interest that makes society thrive; further, it helps the citizens generate the power they wish they had.

According to Leu, there is no such thing as not voting because not voting is voting. When people fail to vote, they effectively cast a vote to the opponent they least agree with (TED Talk, 2016). Not voting empowers those whose interests one opposes, and one can equate it to passing power and leadership to one’s enemy. Rather than sit back and complain about how messy politics are, how complicated voting is, all citizens should show up and make their voice count in the ballot box.

The best way the government can encourage more citizens to vote is through building trust among the citizens. Once the citizens understand that their votes matter and that their leadership choice will influence the policies to be put in place, they will feel more participate in elections. Additionally, the government should invest in civic education to citizens at a young age and instill in them the importance of determining the country’s leadership. The government should also modernize the voting process and make it less tiresome and easier, like introducing online voting.
