Rhetorical Fallacies

Fallacies are considered common mistakes or errors that typically undermine the logic of a particular argument, and they can either be illegitimate arguments or even irrelevant points. Fallacies usually are identified since they lack enough proof that supports the claim. Rhetorical fallacies or fallacies of reasoning does not create an opportunity for the open, two-way exchange of information upon which real conversation relies; instead, they divert the reader’s attention with different appeals as an alternative of using sound reasoning. They are consequently grouped into three groups, including ethical, emotional, and logical fallacies. An example of such a misconception that is common in most workplaces engages the straw man fallacy that happens when the opponent fails to understand one’s argument to make it ideal for attacking or refuting. Instead of effectively focusing on the presented evidence, most executives tend to depend on this fallacy to show a superficially similar but not equal version of the given stance; thus, assisting them in forming an illusion of easily defeating the argument.

In counteracting the use of such fallacies, one ought to first evaluate the flaw in reasoning that it contains and then later point it out and discuss why it is a problem. This will also need a firm or strong opposing argument that counters it implicitly; for example, in a situation where one uses the straw man fallacy, the points made should not be generalized beyond the initial context. A person’s argument should stand on its advantage in the domains in which it is highlighted. This is a counterproductive way of dealing with such fallacies when presented at a workplace, as this will stop the creation of an imaginary scenario.
