Entry into higher institutions of learning attracts a deep positive inner feeling. All students look forward to meeting their educational milestones and objectives. Personally, joining university was one of my happiest moments in life because I knew that it was closer to fulfilling my dreams. However, when I joined the English Department, I encountered massive challenges that left me wondering if I would achieve my goals and objectives. With time, I sharpened my skills and knowledge and attained higher grades in my English units. The exposure I have obtained over time has enabled me to improve my writing skills, become a critical reader and thicker, advance my planning abilities, and develop distinct approaches of handing various audiences depending on the topic at hand. These are crucial elements that will allow me to excel in the present and future times. English 101 course provides learners with the opportunity to sharpen writing skills, planning abilities, become better readers and thinkers, and deliver to various audiences.

Improved Writing Skills

Undertaking the English 101 course assisted me in developing my writing abilities. When I joined this course, I had a rough and hectic time writing an academic paper. For instance, when I was first assigned a topic, I did not know where to start and the contents to incorporate. I could not meet the word count for the given topic. However, I have acquired crucial writing skills and tactics. I can satisfactorily complete the set limit for any assigned topic. Some of the skills that I have acquired in line with writing include the description, narration, and personal elements. Also, my grammar is excellent because I keenly observe aspects such as punctuation and sentence structure. I always deliver papers that follow the expected analysis with the adequate use of evidence and synthesis. I believe that I am in a better place to write an academic following all the requirements. Gaining quality writing skills has boosted my esteem because I always felt that I would never be able to write an excellent paper that can earn me a higher grade. Thus, this course has opened me massive writing opportunities, and I intend to utilize them optimally. Besides cultivating impeccable writing skills, the course has also allowed me to sharpen my planning skills.

Effective Planning

Planning is one of the quality characteristics that I have built over time due to my exposure to the course. Before commencing on writing an academic paper, I was taught the rationale of planning. It enables an individual to establish a sense of direction, focus on the objectives and the intended results. Having such a plan at one’s disposal creates a foundation for successful outcomes. Today, I always plan before venturing into doing something, be it academics or any other life-based perspective. For example, when assigned with a topic, I always have a plan to guide me through writing and revision processes. This skill has enabled me to make significant strides in my studies. Not only has the course helped me to build my planning skills but also to become a better reader and thinker.

Critical Reading and Thinking Abilities

I have acquired critical reading and thinking abilities. In my academic journey, I encounter numerous texts that call for analysis. I am expected to read a text and critically think about the message that it carries. The course has helped me develop quality reading skills and cross-examine the content to understand its primary message. For example, I am in a better place to identify an author’s thesis and supporting statements. Notably, I have learned important ways of responding to academic content and peer work. For example, one time, I was assigned a complicated text because it has a hidden message. I read it multiple times to ensure that I understood its message. This made it possible to identify the writer’s main and supporting ideas. This experience generated a high level of satisfaction because I felt that I had made a crucial step in my reading and critical thinking skills. Lastly, the course has taught me significant insights regarding communicating with various audiences to enhance message delivery.

Advanced Message Delivery across Different Audiences

Pursuing the English 101 course had made me a better communicator, both verbal and written. Initially, I was not a better place to address an audience in writing and one-on-one. Also, I found it challenging to understand how I could approach an audience. However, after taking the course, I have learned distinct ways of communicating to a wide range of audiences to ensure that a message effectively reaches the targeted group. For example, when addressing a group of young people, I use simple and clear language. This helps to meet the concerns of individuals who might be experiencing problems understanding the English language. The delivery technique for a young group is different compared to that of an elderly population. One of the insights that I have acquired is avoiding jargon and acronyms to enhance the communication process.

Overall, pursuing the English 101 course has created significant milestones in my academic journey. Initially, I faced massive challenges writing academic papers, engaging critical reading and thinking, establishing productive planning, and identifying the best ways of passing a message to an audience. However, these are vital areas that I have advanced both academically and professionally. I believe that the knowledge and skills acquired will help me meet quality educational milestones and career goals.
