Senge’s Five Disciplines and Organizational Climate
Senge’s Five Disciplines and Organizational Climate
Describe Senge’s five disciplines.
The five disciplines developed by Senge include:
In this discipline, all employees in an organization share the same vision for the organization’s direction. An organization with a shared and authentic vision will find it easy to have its employees participate in bringing it closer to its vision (Reese, 2020, p. 76). People feed for the game in this principle but do not play according to a game’s rules.
This principle describes the generalizations and presumptions that people have that influences their actions. The first step in changing how people think is by having them reflect on their beliefs and behaviours. One of the mental nodes in an organization is understanding its hierarchy and maintaining openness (Reese, 2020, p. 76). In many cases, hierarchical power shortcomings can be overcome by personal values, and transparency can be achieved by people being open about their needs and quitting power games.
This principle includes two aspects. Team members must be willing to be open to learning with colleagues and shifting their menta nodes. Further, individuals in a team are more likely to learn faster than on their own.
This discipline describes the strength that people have to keep learning and be proactive in critical and essential things. Two crucial factors in this discipline are that people see reality as it is and define what is critical to an individual.
This discipline is used to analyze patterns by looking at a holistic point of view in an organization. According to Senge, when an elephant is split into two, one does not have two elephants to take care of (Reese, 2020, p. 76). Instead, one can only take care of one whole elephant. This elephant metaphor describes how an organization is like a living organism. It can only be managed as a whole. Generally, this principle incorporates the other four.
Discuss the characteristics of an organizational climate that supports organizational learning.
A company that is interested in training and developing its employees has:
A company interested in training its employees has a training system based on its personnel department and strategy. This directive often follows four steps: analyzing training needs in the company, planning for the training and development, realizing these plans, and evaluating the training activities (Berberoglu, 2018, p. 5).
Teamwork in an organization fosters learning and development. Therefore, colleagues can consult each other on problematic areas and work together to actualize a project, thus promoting learning.
An organization that supports leaning has managers and strong leadership that direct employees on what duties and actions to take. A manager facilitates leaning activities in an organization, thus enabling the workers to grow and develop.
Learning in an organization involves both formal and informal learning. Organizations that encourage informal learning support their workers by creating courses and activities that foster learning (Berberoglu, 2018, p. 5).
Further, an organization that supports organizational learning creates offers, sometimes through departments where its employees can register for courses and training programs.
Analyze how organizational climate and Senge’s disciplines are related to organizational learning.
Generally, the organizational climate creates a safe and friendly environment through which employees can effectively apply and utilize Senge’s five disciplines in an organization. Without a congenial corporate environment, it would be challenging to support learning in a company and use the team education disciplines (Destler, 2017, p. 522). Therefore, a well-developed organization climate must be created to maintain a conducive learning environment in an organization.
