I. Content & Development Requirements:

• 6 pages in length in MLA format including Times New Roman typeface and 12 point font.
• Unless approved by the instructor, all topics for this essay should be chosen from the topic list in the GALILEO database entitled “Issues & Controversies.”

• Introductory paragraph should fulfill the four communicate functions of paragraphs, including an introductory strategy, brief background information on the topic, a persuasive thesis, and a preview of the plan of development of the essay
• First major section of the body of the essay should contain 1-3 paragraphs of detailed background of topic, such as the history and facts about the topic necessary to lay the premise (foundation) of the essay’s argument
• The body of hte essay should incorporate opposing viewpoints and develop at least three separate points for an against the thesis argument
• The different points for and against the thesis should be supported by facts, examples, stories, and quotations from research sources
• A variety of research sources should be located and utilized; 5-10 sources can be listed in one’s annotated bibliography; however, only research actually quoted or cited should be listed in your essay’s works cited page.
