Protecting Child’s Online Identity

Parents have always determined what is suitable to share concerning their kids with other individuals on social networks. Considerably, the disclosure norms have varied with parent viewpoints varying from parents that share intimate particulars concerning their kids to parents that consider some details being so intimate to share. Army Webb and her husband are justified in going to lengths to control their daughter’s online identity since they are responsible for their child’s privacy and control over the personal information offered online. There is a need to control children’s online identity since it puts children at risk of humiliation, identity theft, invasion of privacy, future discrimination as well as developmental issues linked to consent and autonomy.

Over the last few years’ parents have been challenged by the technology-saturated world which has greatly affected how they raise their children. Social media has been useful for getting advice and sharing their experiences as they raise their children. But how much information and personal details they are sharing on networking sites can pose a potential danger to the child. They have been faced with compound choices on in what way to understand, control, and limit the kind of contents that should be shared about their children and with whom they will share.

Many parents post their photos, stories, and videos of their children on social media since they are proud of their families and wanted to stay connected with friends and family. Since children are not aware of what is being posted online, they may fail to stay true as they grow. When a child grows they may get embarrassed about the content their parents shared about them on social networking sites particularly funny videos, photos, and updates on their behavior and developmental challenges.

Posting on networking can invade the privacy of a child. Children have their right to privacy as well as the protection of their personal information online. There are privacy concerns that arise from images shared by parents online or the personal information collected by sites (Wink, 2017). Ideally, when an image or video is posted online, it can stay there forever. This means that parents need to carefully think about what they post online and be aware of the people accessing the information. For instance, some sites collect children’s personal information without notifying the parents. They fail to get their approval before they collect and disclose a child’s personal information such as phone number, address, physical whereabouts photos, videos, and persistent identifiers which can be utilized in tracking the child’s activities over time. Therefore, parents need to control their child’s online identities and protect their personal information.

Most of the parents have considered preserving their children’s identity which is critical for privacy and maintaining a healthy relationship with the family. According to COPPA, rule parents have the authority to control their child’s personal information from companies and sites that collect children’s information online. COPPA requires that the companies and sites notify the parents and acquire their approval before collecting and using any information (Bansal, 2016).

Parents should monitor their child’s online identity since the personal information posted online can be used for bullying. Therefore, parents have to be concern about how others react to the information shared online about their children. For instance, old photos and videos about the child on social media can be used for insult, making fun of them, or even bullying when they grow older (Hamming, 2020). For instance, parents tend to switch comments of kids’ videos on YouTube to avoid potential bullying from anonymous people that may react negatively on the updates.

Considerably, it is difficult to control information once it has been posted online. This is because one cannot restrict the viewers from having screenshots of the post and sharing with others beyond one’s reach. Deleting posts from social media may not be useful since they are still live on the internet archive. With that in mind, there is a reason for parents to protect the online identity of their children since it may affect them when they are much older. For instance, posting a video of a negative parenting experience could have affected a child’s ability to secure a job in the future. This is because companies have begun reviewing Facebook profiles as well as other Networking sites to make effective decisions. There is a need to secure the child’s privacy since the parents are not sure what the children’s goals will be in the future when they get older. The parents should think of how to prospect employers may react with regards to certain sensitive information about their kid’s childhood moments.

Over the years, digital kidnapping has been on the rise. This is where an individual steals videos and pictures of minors from the internet and begins to post as if they were their own (Hamming, 2020). Others steal the pictures and impersonate the child responding to the comments as if they were the child. These comments can be malicious and disturbing. Therefore, there is a need to control what is posted online to protect the child’s online identity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Amy Webb and her husband are justified to control their daughter’s online identity to avoid the dangers that arise from personal information on the internet. Concerning the paper, it is clear that sharing personal information about a child on the internet and social networking sites can result in an invasion of privacy, digital kidnapping, bullying, future discrimination, and issues linked to autonomy and consent.
