Me Too Movement

Tarana Burke started the Me Too movement because she had the desire to do something about the rampant sexual violence in her community. She started Me Too and the vision of the movement is to power empathy between survivors of sexual violence and to help open up to the possibility of healing after the harrowing experiences. Her vision was to see a world free of sexual violence (Burke, 2019). She believes that with the movement, it is possible to build such a world.

She had hoped that with the movement more people would come out and openly talk about their experience with sexual assault (Burke, 2019). The opening up would be a step close to healing the wounds that the victims of sexual assault have to live with daily.  The movement is about helping people heal and helping them to release the bitterness of the sexual violence they experienced.

Yes, I agree with the ideas behind the movement. I think it is time that people came together and spoke about their experiences with sexual violence. The more people talk about the lesser the victims will be shamed. The movement is not a vindictive movement against men because rape does not only happen to women. The Me Too movement was created for both male and female victims of sexual violence. It is not a war against men but a war against rapists. According to Burke (2019), one in six boys is raped, and one in four girls also experience sexual violence. The movement is thus, created for the healing of that one girl and that one boy who went through a traumatizing sexual assault and kept it to themself. It is about getting them to come out of their shell and talk about the experience to help them heal and not to carry the bitterness of the experience into their adult lives.
