Caterpillar Inc. possesses numerous strengths that build upon its brand image, portfolio, competitive advantage, and reputation in domestic and international markets. For instance, the company’s mission statement ensures customers receive high and the best value of services and products. This seems to have been achieved effectively as Caterpillar Inc. prides itself on exemplary and highly valued customer satisfaction through the presence of high-quality products and services. High-quality products are communicated by the strengths of good returns of capital expenditure, robust and reliable dealer community in the supply chain, highly skilled workforce, and the automation of corporate activities, processes, and systems hence increased consistency and high-quality products (Thompson, 2018). All these strengths also align with the company’s vision, which involves being global leaders in providing value among customers. Therefore, Caterpillar Inc. sources its strengths from the mission and vision statements, which has been translated and achieved through its corporate processes, products, and strategies.
Analyzing and evaluating the threats and weaknesses in Caterpillar Inc., two common themes are identified: technological issues and stiff competition in the industry. Primarily, adoption, integration, and investments in new and advanced technology are low in the company showing a slow or ineffective technological change that has also contributed to low product innovation and differentiation rates. Moreover, the company’s research and development are equally starved, which can maximize the company’s competitive advantage when connected with high technological change levels. The modern corporate and consumer world is highly influenced by the ever-changing and advancing technological trends. Companies must be flexible and adaptive to these changes maximizing the opportunities and benefits of technology or face extreme risks such as stiff and intense competition when competitors use the advanced technologies to lean and automate its processes (Mehdizadeh, 2018). Hence, Caterpillar Inc. faces possible risks if it does not integrate new and advanced technologies in almost all functions in departments such as Marketing, R&D, and Product Development. The weaknesses and threats are intertwined between technological issues, which result in low research, and development, lack of product innovation, and minimized competitive advantage. All these make the company susceptible to numerous risks. They include intense competition, product imitation, and overly decreasing competitive advantage.
When comparing the company’s weaknesses and opportunities, a surprising and admirable pattern is developed. A primary weakness that results in others involves low technological advancement, low product innovation rates, product gaps, and low R&D rates. However, in the opportunities, Caterpillar Inc. can highly maximize its comparative and competitive advantage if they increased their technological utilization while integrating new and advanced technologies for increased product innovation, positioning, differentiation, and product segments (Ksenofontov, Ksenofontov, & Kirpicheva, 2019). Hence, the weaknesses that Caterpillar Inc. faces can be addressed by exploiting the opportunities presented. The comparison shows that these opportunities are outcomes of the company’s weaknesses. Hence, the weaknesses-opportunity (WO) arena places a rich source of effective strategies when developing growth and competitive advantage strategies. Moreover, Caterpillar Inc. has the ability and core competencies to address the weaknesses and exploit opportunities using the identified core competencies and strengths.
A proposed mitigation strategy in Caterpillar Inc. would be integrating new and advanced technologies in the R&D, Marketing, and Product Development departments. This will address the common technological and competition risk identified and evaluated. Besides, technological change will ensure product innovation, improved R & D, and product diversification, hence maximizing competitive advantage (Ksenofontov, Ksenofontov, & Kirpicheva, 2019).
