Supply Chain Disruptions
Overview to Supply Chain Disruptions
Supply chain disruptions are events and activities that interrupt the smooth flow of products from one point to another. For example, a disruption can affect the delivery of products to the consumers at the right time. This affects consumer experiences and satisfaction. One of the events that portray these disruptions is the COVID-19 pandemic. Its emergence saw the global domain experience numerous supply chain disruptions. As research indicates, the pandemic caused massive supply chain disruptions that saw entities failing to realize the targeted goals and objectives (Butt, 2021). These issues primarily emerged from the restrictions placed on the transportation domain. Addressing supply chain disruptions calls on stakeholders to develop proactive actions for handling them. A study by Saglam, Cankaya, and Sezen (2020) reveals that corporate leaders should verse themselves with proactive mitigation challenges to handle and manage potential challenges and disruptions that can occur in the chain. This is the best way of achieving flexibility and resilience. The industry is highly exposed to adverse events that hamper the production and delivery of goods from the point of manufacture to consumption. This portrays the need to ensure the chain is smooth and efficient to allow stakeholders to tap into advanced outcomes.
The industry is highly affected by natural disasters, increased material prices, transportation challenges, and numerous encounters. Disruptions in the supply chain domain are associated with numerous adverse outcomes. For example, disruptions cause higher prices of goods due to the shortage of products in the market. Organizations experience reduced productivity and massive shortcomings in ensuring that products arrive at the desired destination at the right time. This calls for organizational leaders to understand these projected outcomes and devise strategies to protect themselves against associated risks and threats.
Application
ASOS is a major brand that has experienced supply chain disruptions and encountered challenges in meeting supply and demand. For example, after the pandemic occurred, ASOS collaborated with the suppliers to shift production to ensure that it met the demand for its products (McMaster, 2020). This portrays efforts by an establishment to introduce strategic actions for handling supply chain disruptions that can emerge and affect primary milestones. The brand is a significant dealer of clothes and fashion-related items. The pandemic exposed it to numerous risks and threats as it stood to experience the inability to align its supplies with demand. However, through effective collaborations with suppliers, the brand accelerated its outcomes. If the brand assumed the situation and left its supply chain process to run itself, it would have become increasingly prone to critical challenges. However, the orderly manner in which its leadership approaches the situation paved the way for positive outcomes. As the Bible states in 1st Corinthians 14:40, “All things should be done decently and in order” this shows that organizations that invest in this approach obtain the desired milestones (King James Bible, 2022).
Question for Classmates
What do you think organizations should do to address supply chain disruptions especially in the event that the industry is exposed to a similar pandemic as the COVID-19 one?
Overall, the supply chain industry is increasingly exposed to disruptions from natural disasters, transportation failures, and price increases. These are conditions that are likely to emerge in this domain. This portrays the need for corporate leaders to evaluate potential risks and develop vital ways of safeguarding their entities from massive negative events. The success and sustainability of established supply chain processes rely on how well leaders can make informed and quality decisions.
