The Daring Lesson

The Daring Lesson provided for kinesthetic teaching and learning approach, which is a fantastic approach used by Miss Elliott with the third graders. Through this approach, children needed to experience the presence of discrimination first hard instead of learning it, as the teacher explained discrimination could not be explained, taught, or seen from books (Aaron, 2017). It was not enough for the third graders to listen to their teacher teaching against discrimination. This is because the sociopolitical climate that period was characterized by inferiority and discrimination of black and Indian people. Families and friends fed these children stereotypes and racial prejudices that black people and Indians were inferior with white people claiming the supremacy (PBS, 2017) . The daring lesson occurred during an important historical period when Martin Luther King was murdered. Thus, discrimination and segregation of black communities was prevalent, hence, influencing these children to think that white people were better than blacks or Indians.

The exercise teaches that until people experience or undertake kinesthetic learning, they will never develop inclusivity or cultural awareness and responsiveness. Educating and cautioning against discrimination and racism is not enough until one lives and experiences the pain and mental disturbance racially discriminated people face. This video awakens an emotional feeling in me, releasing that until one lives or experiences discriminatory situations that we see among minority and marginalized groups; they will never understand the problems they face. Moreover, the video invokes a learning practice to educate myself on intercultural aspects and communication to eliminate ethnocentric biases and maximize my competence. Learning will maximize my cultural awareness and eliminating cultural biases as well as single stories I may have encountered in life. These strategies will maximize my cultural responsiveness, competence, and being sensitive (SU.edu, 2020).
