Literary Devices and Themes in Alice Through the Looking Glass
Alice Through the Looking Glass is a novel by Lewis Carroll. The author employs a theme of loneliness where Alice is always alone through all her adventures, from which she feels but cannot find any relief. Before she walks through the looking glass into the other world, her companions are cats with whom she has given human qualities for her company. After going through the looking glass, she makes several attempts to find companionship with the many individuals she meets but is often disappointed, leaving her dejected and sad. However, she meets a White Knight whom she likes but has to leave to take on her new role as Queen. She believes that loneliness is part of growing up, and even though she is scared, she knows she must transform to womanhood alone. The theme of loneliness helps bring the readers to Alice’s life where they feel what Alice feels as it is all something every human must go through.
The author makes use of symbolism as a literal device. For instance, a chess game is a symbol that represents life and fate. The rushes that she pulls from the water represents dreams, and the sleeping Red King implies that humankind is a dreamt-up version of a supernatural being and, in this case, God’s imagination. The symbol that we aspects of a dream are based on a philosopher names Bishop Berkeley. In the book, symbols expound on the deeper meaning of the story where events and people are not just part of a story but also a deeper meaning to life. The author carefully applies symbols that the readers are left expounding on the importance of life, and most of the things we do.
