The purpose of this discussion is:

to practice framing your messages in ways that are appealing to people who are different from you, and
to understand how “flexing” your communication style can help you become more influential.
For your first post, start by listing your MBTI (Jungian) personality type. Then, describe how you like to communicate, using your personality type as well as any other individual preferences you may have.

Respond to at least 3 people whose personality is different from yours, addressing the following situation. For the sake of this discussion, pretend that you all work for the same organization, Z Corp. Convince a peer to join your committee that’s in favor of promoting a 4-day work week (10 hour days). The boss needs to be convinced by the committee. Frame your message using what you’ve learned about your peer’s communication preferences.

Communication Preferences

Communication preferences are key to how an individual’s personality. For instance, I am INTJ (Introvert 9%, Intuitive 41%, Thinking 31%, and Judging 19%). This means I have a high affinity for personal interactions, overthinking, and mostly keeping things to myself. I am a strong believer in having interpersonal relationships and am not a big fan of communicating in general. In most cases, when asked a question in public, I tend to think carefully before answering, as I believe thinking is crucial in every aspect of communication, especially when responding to a question. According to my personality of INTJ, I am highly intuitive. This means that I use both my mind and physical senses to understand reality and maintaining healthy relationships with other people. Part of me being intuitive is that I get messages from all around, and I am keen on appreciating other people’s emotions. This means that it is highly unlikely for me to be offensive to other people and mostly give other people their personal space.

I am also a 9% introvert, which means that I like to keep things to myself. I believe that keeping a small circle is crucial in maintaining a healthy relationship with other people. However, I also tend to judge other people, as my Judging in the INTJ personality is 19%. Conversely, I believe that I can change this aspect of my personality to suit other people’s communication preferences. I understand that judging is not a healthy aspect of communication, and by slowly understanding my communication preferences, I can also alter the things that are disrespectful to other people. I believe that my personality is clear and favorable to my peers and hence would like my peers to join my committee in Z Corp. I believe that we can work together, as my personality is welcoming and will greatly promote teamwork in favor of advocating for a 4-day workweek.
