A person with low vision uses vision as a primary means of learning but supplements this by using tactile and auditory input when a blind person receives no useful information through the sense of vision. The education goals for these two sets of children differ from each other where for low vision, the target lies at the ability to use different aids into use while for blind children it means teaching focus and more attention on fatigue.

 

  1. What does a classroom teacher need to know about physical disabilities and health impairments in children?

 

A teacher needs to know the history for the disability or health impairment as well as master the use of mnemonics such as sit up, lean forward, ask questions, nod you head and track the teacher. A teacher must also be very responsive to environmental issues such as the seating placement, distractions and proximity.

Skills in positive, instructionally relevant strategies for assessing and dealing with challenging and problem behaviors. Because with such skills the type of disability or disorder does not matter, a teacher is still going to be able to help the children learn.

In a heterogeneous classroom, a teacher should create close proximity to the students ensuring the special requirements of each are met.
