- How does the role of the speech-language pathologist change as a function of the educational setting in which a child with communication disorders is served?
Speech-language pathologist services assist children with communication disorders become effective communicators, decision makers and problem solvers. The process entails memory retraining, language enhancement, cognitive reorganization and improving abstract thinking. From this training, children with communication disorders are directed at a more successful and satisfying educational experience and improved peer relationships. Using speech pathology, these children overcome their challenges, attain pride and self-esteem and determine a role for their lives.
- How might a student’s and his family’s perspective and wishes regarding educational placement be influenced by their membership in the Deaf culture?
Parents may take different approaches on this. While some may think that it is a good ideas for their hearing children to go to a private deaf school and learn more about the deaf culture including how to understand their parents more, other parents would rather their children go to a public school and have ASL be a second language. It merely depends on how a family is set up and whether or not they are proud to belong to such a culture. Some may be biased towards a complete deaf culture while others my adore the same culture and want their children to belong to the same culture.
- How do the educational goals and instructional methods for children with low vision differ from those for children who are blind?
A person with low vision uses vision as a primary means of learning but supplements this by using tactile and auditory input when a blind person receives no useful information through the sense of vision. The education goals for these two sets of children differ from each other where for low vision, the target lies at the ability to use different aids into use while for blind children it means teaching focus and more attention on fatigue.
- What does a classroom teacher need to know about physical disabilities and health impairments in children?
A teacher needs to know the history for the disability or health impairment as well as master the use of mnemonics such as sit up, lean forward, ask questions, nod you head and track the teacher. A teacher must also be very responsive to environmental issues such as the seating placement, distractions and proximity.
- What are the most important skills for a teacher of students with severe and multiple disabilities? Why?
Skills in positive, instructionally relevant strategies for assessing and dealing with challenging and problem behaviors. Because with such skills the type of disability or disorder does not matter, a teacher is still going to be able to help the children learn.
- How can the general education classroom teacher provide instruction at the pace and depth needed by gifted and talented students while meeting the needs of other students in the classroom?
In a heterogeneous classroom, a teacher should create close proximity to the students ensuring the special requirements of each are met. For example, more difficult tasks could be assigned to the talented children whole more guidance can be provided to those with special needs. Making a teaching plan based on proper analysis of the teacher can be instrumental in deciding which alternative to use.
