Introduction
Wireless technology is evolving in many areas of wireless communication and mobile devices. For many years, the cables such as optical fibers have ruled the world. However, there has been a revolution and evolution in networking technology from wired to wireless networking in the last decade. Wireless networking technology has been a revolutionary solution that brings new ways for people to share information and communicate. Wireless technology has eliminated the boundaries of location and distance. Currently, wireless technology has been a huge part of everybody’s lives which has increased flexibility and adaptability. Millions of people have stored their data online and have relied on wireless networks for transmission (Osterhage, 2018). However, despite the benefits of wireless technology, it has its limitations. Security has been a major issue in wireless technology. Therefore, this research paper will focus on wireless technology security to create awareness of the security risks, threats, and measures associated with using wireless technology. The research paper will raise awareness to the public to secure their information online while using wireless technology.
The wireless technology has offered flexibility, speed, and network efficiency, which has made it a powerful tool for the tech-savvy generation (Wang et al., 2022). It facilitates fast information sharing and gives users the freedom to roam around without worries about their internet connection. Therefore, the coverage of the wireless technologies has been very broad such that it becomes very helpful to the users according to their use. For instance, the WLAN devices have been used in facilities since they do not require wires to remain connected (Tambe, 2015). However, security issues have been a major challenge in the use of wireless technology. The attacks of wireless technology have included passive and active attacks.
The passive attacks have included spoofing and eavesdropping on information where the attacker attempts to access the transmission illegally. Active attacks include altering messages and real data or creating false data during transmission (Baraković e al., 2016). The wireless technology has been a playground for attackers, with countless perpetrators bypassing the naïve security mechanisms in the wireless technology systems. The wireless technology has been far more prone to security attacks than wired technology. Ideally, the lack of physical transmission mediums has made wireless technology easy to exploit. Some malicious attacks in wireless technology include the insertion of viruses, denial of service attacks, eavesdropping, spoofing, and identity theft. Therefore, there is a need to understand the security threats, how they occur, and how they can be prevented.
Problem Statement
Over the last few years, the usage of wireless technology has been on the rise due to its advantages. In many organizations, wireless technology has been among the most developing telecommunications technologies that enable users to integrate their network with a global network and access a broad range of services. The problem that this study will focus on is the lack of users’ awareness regarding the security threats, vulnerabilities, and effective security measures in the use of wireless technology. Most of the users of wireless technology lack the knowledge of security threats, vulnerabilities and security measures and practices required to secure their information while using wireless technology (Kibona and Ganame, 2018). Computer and mobile devices have been equipped with wireless technology interfaces which have increased flexibility in accessing and sharing information. However, wireless technology has posed security threats and altered organizations’ general information security risk profile.
Unlike wired technology, where data is transmitted and stored in cables, wireless technology uses open-air as a broadcast channel (Zou et al., 2016). Many users of wireless technology are prone to security risks. Lack of boundaries in the wireless technology, just as the hard-wired technology, has made the users prone to exploitation and instruction by other wireless technology users without their awareness that this is happening. Some of the major security issues that have been linked with wireless technology include leaching, intrusion, and exploitation.
Intrusion involves networks that are more open to the intruder, thus easy right to use unless protective actions such as encryption, passwords, and identifier restricting are implemented (SunilKumar, 2017). This has led to more susceptibility to misuse of information and theft on modification of data, unauthorized destruction, and abuse of the network capability. Leaching entails using bandwidth by invaders at the expense of legitimate users and businesses. Exploitation involves misuses of network access to lead denial of service attacks against third parties. The cost of recovery from a security breach caused by wireless technology has been much greater than the cost of preventing it. Especially when wireless technology is being used to transmit sensitive or confidential information. Therefore, maintaining a secure wireless network demands greater effort than wired technology.
Why it is Important.
With the rapid growth in wireless technology, there is a need for more knowledge on the security threats, vulnerabilities, and specific measures to realize and manage the security threats linked to wireless networking technology. Considerably, most of the wireless technology users are large firms and companies that require fast information transmission. Every organization fears interruptions and barriers to their business operations due to information breaches, which prevent the workforce from performing important work functions.
Information security breakdowns interrupt information processing to vendors and consumers in real-time. Security risks resulting from wireless technology have been a growing problem that organizational leaders and employees need to understand. The continual technological innovation in the wireless network has led to security risks in transmitting sensitive information (Chelli, 2015). Wireless technology users need to understand the security threats and information breaches that come with this innovation. This will increase their willingness to exercise appropriate security practices and measures to ensure that the information security policies, strategies, and procedures are enforced and communicated.
The loss of sensitive information and personal data can be detrimental; thus, the need to identify the security threats linked to wireless technology. Understanding the security risks in wireless technology and the management of security threats and vulnerabilities, especially among users and IT managers in organizations, plays an essential role in the security of networks, making the organizations more secure.
How it will be Carried Out
The research will rely on qualitative and quantitative studies (mixed-method research). The qualitative study will involve a systematic review of journals and peer-reviewed articles that focus on wireless network security. The systematic review is different from a literature review since it follows a specific approach to select, locate, evaluate, synthesize, analyze and report evidence that can be used in drawing conclusions. The systematic reviews focus on secondary data to assess and synthesize the existing knowledge on the subject. Therefore, this will allow a transparent, logical, and analytical approach to screening studies and reporting findings on wireless technology security to establish what is already discovered and what needs to be discovered.
As mentioned above, the use of wireless technology has been on the rise in everyday lives. The wireless technology comes with security and privacy issues as well as vulnerabilities. Therefore, this study focused on addressing the issues of wireless technology security issues by creating awareness among the users. The study will rely on a survey conducted on wireless technology users within organizations to identify some of the security threats they encounter as well as the countermeasures used to prevent wireless attacks. A survey entails gauging the representativeness of individual experiences and views. Surveys are effective in describing the traits of a large population. For this case, surveys will be effective in collecting data about wireless security threats, vulnerabilities, and security measures among IT managers and employees to gain insights and information about wireless technology security.
Relevance and Significance.
In the last decade, there has been significant growth in the use of wireless technology. Wireless technology has been continually changing and evolving since the discovery of radio waves (Yacoub, 2017). Some of the interesting developments have come about recently, and wireless technology will continue to make more changes soon. Companies such as Google, Facebook, and Space X have launched various projects with wireless technology advancement in mind. The advent of wireless devices has transformed social and business interactions since internet access is not dependent on the wired system. The wireless technology not only has the capacity to improve the wireless communication systems but also has a range of services and information that can now be accessed through mobile devices. However, with the increased usage of wireless technology, there has been a trade-off between security and convenience. The wireless technology is similar to cyberspace which blurs the distinction between virtual and real, between ICT and physical security.
The advancement of wireless technology has occurred in stages that have standards, techniques, capabilities, and threats that are different from the previous generations (Vora, 2015). The threats of wireless technology are not well known to the public, which makes it easy for attackers to maneuver the security protocols established for wireless networks. With the continued growth of the wireless technologies in smart grid deployments, it’s clear that the wireless technologies will continue to be plagued by security issues (Jokar, Arianpoo, and Leung, 2016). Various research studies have shown that wireless technology has been the riskiest in terms of security due to insufficient knowledge of users to secure their wireless networks.
Ideally, security has always been a major concern for wireless and wired technology users and administrators. With the rise in the use of high-speed networks and demands for specific technologies such as wireless technology, security has been a complex issue (Razzaq et al., 2017). The aim of the study was to assess the different wireless technology security threats, vulnerabilities, and security measures and create awareness among the users on how to protect the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of their information by increasing the security of wireless technology. This will also ensure the reliability of wireless technology communication. Gaining knowledge of the vulnerabilities, threats, and security measures in wireless technology will play a major role in eliminating security risks for users as the development of wireless technology continues. The surveys will offer insights on the wireless technology security threats, vulnerabilities, and measures have well known to the users. The research paper will also promote an understanding of the wireless technology security concept, thus improving wireless security management among wireless technology users.
