The Second Amendment

Guns have been around for a very long period of time despite the controversy of an anticipated opportunity for United States Citizens to possess guns. However, in recent years there has been a problem with the possession of guns due to the increase in mass shootings. Matters such as gun ownership and gun control have remained a controversial issue due to the second amendment. Conversely, many United States Citizens have misinterpreted the second amendment.

Ideally, the second amendment is one of the legal measures that are aimed at restricting and preventing the use and possession of guns. The second amendment has offered a legal limit for the use and possession of arms. The second amendment reads that “a well-regulated militia is necessary for the security of the state and for self-defense.” Therefore, the second amendment has defended the power of people to hold arms for legal purposes such as militia service and self-defense at home. With regard to this, the right to bear and keep arms for self-defense is limited to keeping and carrying the weapon whatsoever.

The United States should have a limitation to the possession, use, and right to purchase guns. Ideally, the second amendment was written in memory of what occurred at the Boston Massacre. The ownership of guns should be controlled since the freedom to own guns has increased mass shootings.  Having a firearm that is regulated is a great deal to help survive violent crimes and real-world danger. The second amendment does not prevent effective gun control. However, the issue is whether there is a political will to take the actions necessary to lower gun violence through effective restrictions. The supreme court, on a number of occasions, has stated that the second amendment only protects the possession of guns for militia service in the time of needs for the security of the state. The government should take action on citizens that violate the laws since that’s a personal decision. There are various ways that the government can make restrictions on those who own guns. For instance, precautions for gun control can be taken, such as requiring a license and keeping an appropriate record of gun sales and gun ownership.

This week, we’ll continue our focus on active citizenship as you arm yourselves with knowledge of current events to be engaged and informed members of society. You’ll learn about some current issues related to civil rights and liberties. Specifically, you’ll  learn about Black Lives Matter, recent efforts to ban trans service members from military service, the importance of the 14th amendment, and differing perspectives on the second amendment.
